1970 LSU at Notre Dame

We were seated low in one of the end zones, but a very significant play occurred right in front of us. My wife had given me an SLR for early Christmas, and I was taking a pic of the action. I was using B&W - as a young engineer, I could not afford color. Theisman was trying to get the pass to Gatewood in the end zone, but had to hurry the throw and the ball hit Casanova in the chest between the numbers. He had 100 yards of open real estate in front of him, but could not handle the ball. I got this pic:
I let the elves at AI enhance the picture and this is what they came up with:
It took four prompts to get the final product - they just had trouble getting the colors right.

Pretty cool, saw ND had a flashback of the game.

There was a festive atmosphere in the Irish locker room after the game. Everyone was in a good mood, and the comments reflected this. When asked what adjustments had been made at half-time, a beaming Coach Pagna facetiously answered: “Well, we gave our defense a pep talk; told ‘em to keep getting them. We gave our punter a pep talk, too.” Linebacker Jim Wright, although trying to hold a straight face, attempted to answer a query as to the performance of the LSU offensive line with “they’re like a bunch of quick, little Jap sumo wrestlers.” And everybody was giving punter Jim Yoder a hard time. As the press converged on him for a few statements, echoes of .”don’t bother with him fellas, he’s too modest; ya won’t get a thing out of him” spilled over from opposite rows of lockers.

Before the game I was in the men's room with my LSU colors, next to an elderly man (probably younger than I am now) who asked seriously, do you really think LSU has a chance against Notre Dame.
I answered, yes, if we play our best game, I think we have a good chance.
He then said, "Well, let me tell you. We got a receiver named Gatewood, and you've never seen anything like him."
I answered, "Well, we got a defensive back named Casanova, and Gatewood has never seen anything like him."
I think Gatewood was held to only about 8 yards for the entire game.

I am a bit jealous. Though I despise Notre Dame, seeing a game at Notre Dame stadium is on the bucket list.

With the colorized version, it looks like the LSU faithful travelled well for the game.

I listened to this game on the radio at a friend's house in Baton Rouge. It's kind of hard to believe it now, but this game was not on TV. Both teams were in the Top 10, but no TV. Only 2 or 3 stations available at the time, and maybe there was an even bigger game that was being shown. Don't remember.

I'll bet no one left at half time, except maybe doctor #6106

it would depend on his call to medical exchange.
I was always under the impression that TC instinctively batted the ball down and realized his mistake immediately. Not sure where that came from since it was not on TV and it was so long ago, but that was one of the biggest games in Tiger history, so i remember.

Back then, TV coverage was arranged well in advance, and there were NCAA rules as to which games could be televised.

yep, i think just ABC had coverage, and you knew preseason if you were going to be on TV that year, reg season.

I was in Tiger Band in the early 80's and we went up to South Bend. While it was a "bucket list" thing, it also was a huge letdown. It was before they did the expansion, and we all thought it was just a glorified high school stadium, albeit with a ton of history. Wasn't loud at all.

Great pic! The elves did a good job too.

Man I wish you had not posted that. When I was in high school Casanova was my idol. It breaks my heart to see what might have been even more than 50 years later.

My late Dad was at that game. it was his dream to go to a game there. I would make him tell me stories about it all the time. The Casanova one your reference here often came up.

This game was in late November and the playing field was not green. I didn't want to push those little feller too hard.

Casanova had a great game. I just looked up a summary of the game, and he held Gatewood to only four receptions for twenty yards.
