Detroit Draft pick trade scenario

got this off another board
Lions
Someone mentioned on the mailbag the option of the lions trading back up from the 20th spot in the 1st to the 14th pick to try to grab 1 of the two top QBs. I checked the value chart and depending on how much they would want it I wonder what the possibility of them trading their 1st 20 pick and 2nd 52nd pick for our 14th. Our 14th is worth 1100 pts and their two picks would be worth 1230. I know it's not equal but if they really want a QB they might would see it's value.

I would love that...I think this draft is thin, so trading down would be a good move IMO.

that'd be an excellent scenario. i hope we trade down.. but i don't mind drafting davis at our current spot.

generally to make the point system work, we would give up a later rd pick or player to balance it out, so it could work. This will all depend if Sanchez (O-Ver-Ra-Ted)drops. Let's cross our fingers and hope! I personally think Stafford will ultimately be the one to drop, and Sanchez will be the first off the board. Stafford's flaws are starting to become more apparant to the scouts. I'm reading that they're starting to cool on him. I don't think this would be a good thing for us. We need Stafford to go 1st, because if not, then he will drop and not be desireable enough for a team to trade up.

I say we trade our 1st and gramatica for their 1st and 2nd.

you are asking us to give up too much. next time I log on, I'm afraid I'll see you suggesting trading Jason David straight up for their 1 and 2. Now don't be crazy, WDF, we can't give up that much!

#20 + #65 (their 3rd)= 1115 about as close as it gets

The picks do not have to equal. It's called the law of supply and demand....if another team wants our pick because a player they covet is available at #14, it's up to them to "entice" us to trade picks with them. If we like their offer, we accept. If we don't, we stay at #14. The "point value chart" is only an aid, not a rule book when determining trade values.

in the NFL this is generally not true, and it screws some teams
it's going to screw a team at the top of this weak arse draft

I disagree. If Stafford starts dropping then those teams behind us start licking their chops and will feel the need to pull off a trade. I dont see him dropping to #14, but if he does, we may come out looking real good pick wise

for anyone interested PFT came up with a modified point sytem. They think it more accurately reflects the value system. The biggest diff is that the upper end first round guys are devalued. That is because of the over sized contracts that go with unproven players. The risks are huge. Few players merit it and few teams want to move up. The higher and bigger the move the less likely.

The chart makes more sense, but still holding to chart value is stupid and it screwed SF a few years ago.

Agreed.
I just dont get why you need a point system, shouldn't these GMs just know if a trade involving picks is good just by looking at it? Is the points thing really necessary?
Not only that, the points really shouldn't be the same for everyone. A shitty team who needs to draft lots of players and get ready for the future will value a good quantity of draft picks over a good team who knows they'll compete for a Super Bowl, so the points system should be tweaked for each team.
