I hate to be the one to break it to you but our catchers aren’t very good defensively

I get mistakes by a freshman but dam. I cringed and was thinking he would throw it to right field.

And the wild thing about this is both of our catchers was rated as one of the best in the country out of high school. Both passed up MLB draft to come.

Guess you can’t always rely on rankings

you can never assume on any level. I wonder what Jay thought. I mean at least cue the situation to him before the pitch.

These rankings are heavily influenced by their offensive potential. Braun listed at 1B and never played it. Frey and Jared Jones were highly ranked catchers who didn't catch for LSU outside of a couple of times.

I think everyone was thinking this. But I'd have to imagine that exact scenario isn't practiced much of at all. In that moment, training kicks in. They dropped strike 3 and training/instinct says "dropped strike 3, throw runner out at first." Not an excuse, but I can see that being a reason over what we at home see as simple baseball IQ.

When it happened I asked my brother the same thing lol

I find college baseball, in general, to be very sloppy this year...

Jordan coaches the catchers and is 3B coach. In that moment Serna probably just asked himself “what would Jordan do?” so he went full send FTW

First of all, the ball was totally catchable. Can we stop dropping rudimentary baseball pitches? It is so frustrating giving up extra bases with this shite.

Reverting back to OP’s point, the ball just didn’t drop at his feet. It rolls a bit to the 1B side. The catcher knows that if he takes the time to look back to home, and the runner is close to home, he isn’t going to have time to look back to 1st for the out.

I know lsu has botched some of these throws to 1st from C, but these are layup throws for catchers playing at this level. The decisiveness of Serna to go to 1st really made this play work.

Nerves. Simple case of nerves. Even if he thought an out was needed, the bases were loaded...just touch home plate. IDK, there was so much wrong with that but bottom line is you really can't blame the guy.

The throw to 1st is almost always the guaranteed out because the runner has to run the entirety of the baseline which gives the catcher more time to react.

The runner from 3rd can take a lead and make that run a shorter distance thereby decreasing the amount of time for the catcher to react.

If the drop by the catcher had landed and stayed on the plate he can pick it up and touch the plate. However it didn’t and he had to move to get it. The catcher made the appropriate call and threw it to 1st where he had complete awareness of where the runner was.

If the ball bounces in front of the catcher, sure. This was great awareness by Serna to just throw to first.
