Question about the field at Alex Box

Since we won a series and don’t have to bitch about losing….
Why does it look so bad, so early in the season?
Awful in between the mound and home plate. Also, it looks awful behind second base and in right field.
What is going on?

Natural grass, which often gets a pass, is very difficult to maintain at a high level if conditions aren’t perfect.
LSU spares no expense and it still has problems which shows just how difficult it is to have a terrific surface.

How hard is it to maintain? All it takes is watering and fertilizer.

That may be partly true if you aren’t using it as a baseball field where it gets wear and tear.

LSU is also known for doing a great job on the grass and drainage at The Box and in Tiger Stadium. If it's not looking good I'm going to go ahead and blame something other than the grounds keepers.

When i tuned in on Friday night i noticed that the dirt portions of the field, mound and batters box, looked choppy and clumpy. Wet. It looked bad.

Hardly.
Growing sports turf is more challenging than growing a yard.
This year cool nights have slowed transition times. Water and fertilizer don’t matter until the nights warm up.

100%. It’s not about budget or know how. That department is legit.

Probably cause Jay has been running three a days to get out of this slump

Still early in the growing season and has had some cooler weather. I assume they use celebration bermuda like they do for the football field.
Im also assuming they dont do any PRG or a cooler season grass overseed to supplement the field during the transition months.

Because bermuda grass goes dormant in the winter and it’s not all the way back yet. It’s March

That got 2 weeks to manicure, how bout we get this Korean Nail Manicure shop down the street to work their magic. They make it weel prittie

Lots of traffic (pitcher fielding practice) going on which causes the ryegrass to die out. The Bermuda isn't fully out of dormancy hence the thin growth.

What Dawson said..and I would add, it’s dry down here right now. We were talking about it in my section today. You could see rain clouds forming about 4pm and lots of guys were talking about how we need the rain. Plus that cold snap 2 weeks ago and this weekend hasn’t helped.
Don’t underestimate what rain can do for growing. I’d rather have a 1/4in of rain than 1in of irrigation.
