St. Louis’ largest problem is that its public schools are so bad (both academically and behaviorally), that no families willingly send their kids to SLPS.

Then, the mayor hollowed out downtown foot traffic with stupid COVID restrictions that the city might never recover from. The last stats I saw showed the downtown had lost 70% of its foot traffic on a weekly basis versus pre-Covid.

There’s an almost 50% vacancy rate in downtown commercial properties.

That means the local businesses leave. Meaning more companies relocate out. Meaning more local businesses leave.

It’s a doom loop of failure (as the WSJ accurately described).

And we haven’t even gotten to the crime problem.

Can you list some cities with Republican mayors?

In other news, water is wet.

If a place is overwhelmingly ran by Dems, expect the worse. Alabama is a very red State. Crime stats tell me to stay away from Montgomery, Bham, and Mobile. Care to guess the political makeup of those places? Hell, most of the violent crime committed in the bedroom communities of those places, are by people with addresses from those cities proper.

Imagine how badly smaller cities must be struggling to regain foot traffic

DIck Hackett was mayor of Memphis until 1991, and was a Republican. Just sayin'.

Elect a GOP mayor tomorrow in Memphis etc... WTH is he going to do? I believe the "electorate" is the problem not the Mayors...just a symptom.

Eh. There’s usually a competency gap in many of these mayors. Their only skill is getting elected. They have no actual governance skills.

And then the cities just implode due to entropy + apathy + incompetence.

It’s amazing that voters think that people who couldn’t manage a Subway could someone transform into managing a billion dollar city operation.

Mayors used to be smart businesses men and would steal just enough to get rich in their community but would also create and improve infrastructure. Now it’s people that couldn’t hold a job in the private sector that steal in front of your face and dare you to hold them accountable and we don’t.

I have not researched the rest of those cities you listed, but Lexington has a lesbian boomer Democrat and the previous mayor (current transportation secretary for the state) is a gay boomer democrat.

Well they could start by locking up the small percentage of the electorate that is causing most of the problems. No more catch and release.

Every city has the rich part of town that is policed much harder than the ghettos. It’s not like the criminals stay away from these areas to be nice. They know FAFO. I liked the idea of deploying national guards to gain control and clean up these cities.
