My YouTube got me on an algorithm that showed old full length braves games from the 90s.

I tuned into a regular season game on TBS when they were still at the old Fulton County Stadium.. just a normal game

The first half inning took 35 minutes and it was just a normal inning with...

One single
no walks,
2 ground outs,
1 fly out

In today's world where everybody's attention span is 19 seconds, I don't see how 90s baseball could compete with baseball in 2026 (timewise)

I could not believe how slow those older baseball games took to play.

I am very thankful for the new pitch timer

Some old head is about to bitch at you and say watching Nomar Garciaparra adjust his gloves 6 times during an AB was great for the game.

Here's one of the funnier articles about pre-pitch clock baseball.

111 seconds of Pedo Baez not pitching

2000’s baseball was better than 90’s baseball.

They should have just told umpires to speed it up and had a little backbone with them. Faster games, no clock, everyone wins.

nope. You want as little subjectivity as possible.

There was some player on the Tigers, maybe a decade ago, who after every pitch, whether he swung or not, would step out of the box to refasten his gloves.

He deserved to be beaned for such bullshite.

ETA: EVERY GODDAM PITCH.

I don’t think it would be that drastic. Each player can leave the box once on an AB if they call time. Otherwise, you only step out on a foul or a pitch that may drill you.

I agree. I hate clocks in baseball. Just empower the umps to enforce it. Not much different than enforcing a backcourt violation.

There was not a need for a clock. Just a need to push and enforce pace of play vigorously.

Except there is a clock that counts down in basketball to enforce backcourt violations

I don't see the difference between clock and no clock.

Watch games from the 1950-1970 era. Nothing better. I’ll bet it was great prior to 1950s but I can’t speak from personal experience.

Those silly old heads with their *checks notes* unruined attention spans.

Basketball has a shot clock and football has a play clock. It just made sense.

Both those sports also have game clocks. That was the beauty of baseball, no clocks. Timeless.

Worked for over 100 years until this ADHD generation.

Pace of play could have been enforced by the umpire without needing a clock. MLB didn't even try it that way first.

It was the players fault. It became ridiculous how long it would take between pitches. The average game was over 3 hours by the time they changed the rule

Absolutely.

I love baseball and am very traditional about it (I loathe interleague play, for example) but the players abused the pace of the game, so to speak, until it was becoming an unwatchable exercise in standing around, spitting, waiting, fussing with shite …

They did try it that way.

I agree with your post, but the problem with that solution is that everyone is so anti-umpire now. They’d never give them the leeway to selectively enforce it.

The idiosyncrasies of the umpires was also part of the fabric of the game that America loved.

In the pursuit of perfection, we are forgetting that it’s just a game. It doesn’t need to be perfect. It needs to be inspiring and beautiful.
