Even with that, there are still hour requirements that pretty much mean you have to do all of the work yourself. Do your own bookings, cleaning, maintenance, etc.

Want to do all that? Yeah it can work. But it’s tough and hard to pull off, not impossible.

STR doesn’t have hour requirements.

Don't think this is accurate. I own a str. This never came up with my tax guy.

This is what I do for a living.

A lot of rules are broken every day.

You need to spend at least 100 per year on it… and more hours than anyone else. Or 500 total hours regardless of anyone else.

Also the hours must be documented.

Good news is IRS doesn’t have capacity to audit this, so if you are breaking rules, you probably aren’t getting caught…

It absolutely does unless you are providing substantial services, which unless you are providing meals or concierge services, you are not doing.

Is this specific to STR, rental property, or just any passive income as a whole?

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Guess my tax guy knows me well. I don't go out of my way to break rules, but definitely feel I pay more than my fair share.

This.

We have close friends that do backdoor Roth conversions every year even though they have legacy IRAs from prior jobs they don’t consider. Accountant said “nah…that’s fine”.

Got another buddy with a self directed IRA that does all kinds of shite that to my knowledge would be a problem.

Fact is, with any govt regulation, it’s not whether you’ve done something wrong…it’s whether they decide to frick with you.
