[ A Georgia judge set a $1 bond for a woman facing murder charges tied to allegations she used abortion pills to end a pregnancy, potentially paving the way for a possible reduction or dismissal of charges.

Alexia Moore, 31, was arrested by police in Savannah earlier this month on a warrant that echoed a 2019 Georgia law banning abortions after embryonic cardiac activity can be detected.
quote:

Moore was charged with murder after police determined she had been pregnant beyond six weeks “based on the medical staff’s knowledge that the baby had a beating heart and was struggling to breathe”. Moore’s case is believed to be one of the first occasions of a woman being charged for terminating a pregnancy in Georgia since it passed a law banning most abortions and criminalized medical or hospital staff for aborting a fetus older than six weeks.
But superior court judge Steven Blackerby said during a bond hearing on Monday that he thought the charge to be “extremely problematic”, adding: “I have concerns that the state would ever be able to secure a conviction of malice murder.”
quote:

Moore had been incarcerated since her arrest on 4 March in Camden county. She was released on Monday after posting a bond of $2,001, including $1 for the murder charge and $1,000 each for two drug-related charges.
According to court records, Moore went to a hospital in December last year with abdominal pain and told medical staff she had taken misoprostol, a drug used in medication abortions, along with oxycodone.

Authorities said medical records estimated Moore was between 22 and 24 weeks pregnant and investigators say the fetus survived for about an hour after delivery at the hospital. Georgia the new California

I dont have a problem with the low bail necessarily. Assuming she had no other priors.

But if she did the crime ultimately I hope she does the time

I wonder if the ACLU or Planned Parenthood put her up to it

That's 6 MONTHS pregnant, for those keeping score. This article and the law prohibiting abortion after 6 weeks will get passed around to bang the genocidal drum but an elective abortion at 6 months is unheard of virtually everywhere.

Calling it a fetus is completely disingenuous. A ~23 week baby is a legit baby that can be birthed and survive (with NICU help obviously). That's terrible.

If someone had put her up to it, surely they would have made plans not to have questionably legal drugs involved.
She paid the dollar for bail, but she also paid two thousand dollars for bail for two drug charges.

So she murdered her baby? That is def a baby that could survive with help from the NICU.

There is room for some nuance on some of these laws, but in this case, the judge should be impeached and disbarred and the woman should face the death penalty.

So she used pills

But doctors determined that the baby was struggling to breathe via ultrasound?

That's sickening. And I'm not sure what that judge sees as "problematic" with finding malice. She murdered a 2/3 term baby. Tortured it even. If that isn't malicious, what the frick is?

If this was a woman who didn’t find out she was pregnant until after six weeks (not uncommon at all if you’re not trying to conceive) and it was shortly after, I’d be a lot more bothered by the charge. But fetuses are viable outside of the womb at 24 weeks. You’re well beyond misoprostol at that point.

I’m assuming the drug charges are for the oxy and the misoprostol?

What’s the issue with a $1 bond?

He's not legislating. He's just the bail judge. She still has the charges, and will face them in court. He didn't say "I don't like this law, so I'm dismissing the case".

Why would you want the bail judge disbarred?
