Kentucky Bourbon Trail Advice?

Anyone done the Kentucky Bourbon Trail? My husband and I are planning to visit this Summer.
Any advice or recommendations? Where to stay? Best distilleries to visit?
Saw one recommendation to stay in Louisville because it's the best location for more than just the distilleries (like restaurants, bars, activities). But then I see how spread out the distilleries are...

Homebase out of Louisville. You can hit several places in a day.

Makers Mark and Heavens Hill around Bardstown, with Makers a must visit. Can do Buffalo Trace, Woodford, and Castle & Key in one day from Lexington.

We did this trip a few years ago. We hit Old Forester and the Louisville Slugger museum one day and then the next we did Woodford, Castle and Key and Buffalo Trace.

We stayed at Marriott Lexington Griffin Gate just north of downtown Lexington. Booked a tour with a small group through Central Kentucky Tours. The guide picked us up at the hotel. The tour went to Woodford, Four Roses, and ended at Buffalo Trace. The next day on the way back to Tennessee, we stopped at Maker's Mark.
The night before the tour we had a great dinner at Dudley's On Short in Lexington.
ETA: I have been to Louisville several times and not a fan. Lexington is nice.

Going in the fall with some college buddies, including three who are local. We are staying in Louisville and going to Woodford Reserve and Castle & Key. Will likely throw in another. Also going to Keeneland for a day at the races. Dinner at Jeff Ruby's Steakhouse.

I just did this and would agree. I stayed at the Hotel Distil in downtown Louisville. No complaints

We did our tours through Kentucky Bourbon Boys. They were awesome - highly recommend. They pick up in Louisville or Lexington (other areas too).
We were in Lexington and toured Buffalo Trace, Woodford, and Castle and Key. Lunch spot somewhere I cannot recall. They arrange everything - tickets, meals, transportation, etc. Would use them again.
Go to Keeneland for sure. There is a nice variety of hotels and dining in Lexington.

I can’t recommend this enough…book a tour with unique horse farm tours in Lexington, it was an amazing experience and a very good value.

Wife and I just got back yesterday from spending 5 days in Louisville celebrating our 35th Anniv. We toured Buffalo Trace (Hard Hat Tour) and Jim Beam. We both agree that the JB tour was very good as you got to sample as touring. The BT took you deeper into the process. Both were excellent. We also visited Castle and Key, Willet, Rabbit Hole, Bullitt, and every distillery on Whiskey Row. Definitely recommend getting a reservation to Michters Bar. By far the best one that we went to. Only came back with 24 bottles, so we didn't visit every distillery. This trip. We stayed at Aloft on Whiskey row.
