Was looking at some mock draft article on NFL.com, which predicts the Raiders taking Mendoza with the first pick in the draft. The blurb under is something I never really thought about regarding the Raiders, especially since they have overall been a successful franchise, especially in the 70s and 80s.

quote:

The Raiders have drafted just three quarterbacks in the first round since the AFL-NFL merger: Marc Wilson (15th overall pick, 1980), Todd Marinovich (24th, 1991) and JaMarcus Russell (1st, 2007). Mendoza's intelligence and ability to step up in the clutch should end the team's inability to find a franchise signal-caller in Round 1.

LINK

The Raiders drafted Roman Gabriel in 1962, so since, in the last 62 NFL drafts, they've grabbed a QB in the first round only three times. And all busted pretty bad, with the last two being ranked amongst the biggest busts in history.

In fact, since 1963, seems only TWO QBs originally drafted by the Raiders actually worked out to be at least stable starters for the organization, Ken Stabler and Derek Carr.

Looked it up as I remember he was drafted relatively high; Derek Carr went 36 overall.

Yeah, I would have sworn that Carr was a mid-first round pick.

Always wondered why he was successful, and David was not.

The Dallas Cowboys have only drafted 2 QBs in the first round.*

1965 - Craig Morton
1989 - Troy Aikman

* They also drafted Steve Walsh in first round in the 1989 Supplemental Draft.

And drafted two kickers in the 1st round...Ray Guy and Jano.

Raiders loved going against conventional wisdom in the draft.

David was sacked 132 times a year and Derek was only marginally successful in a better situation?

He was, then he went to the Panthers and was still arse.

It's not like Derek had an easier row to hoe. My guy was stuck on the Raiders, who are poster children for QB futility.

My question still stands.

Both were in the cover of Sports Illustrated with really good articles written about them. Back when that was a thing. At least Mandarich made a comeback and had a respectable career. Marinovich had a couple decent games his rookie year but was a total bust.!

They’re “The Raiders”

National brand, not a community asset. They’ll leave Vegas when the time is right.

Mendoza going to be a good one. Kids got balls of steel and swagger. Perfect Raider.

David was pretty shellshocked from that first year where he took a historic beating. The Texans offensive staff under Capers was pretty awful too. He had tools but they had no clue how to utilize him or develop him properly, along with having one of the worst OLs I’ve ever seen in the NFL.

I actually think he would have been a good fit in a Kubiak/Shanny west coast scheme if he had started there, but he was damaged goods by the time Kubiak arrived
