Oil officials in Saudi Arabia are projecting that oil prices could soar past $180 a barrel if disruptions due to the Iran war persist until late April, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Reuters cannot immediately verify the report.

Saudi Arabia’s oil officials are working frantically to project how high oil prices might go if the Iran war and its disruption of energy supplies doesn’t end soon—and they don’t like what they are seeing.

The base case, several oil officials in the Gulf’s biggest producer said, is that prices could soar past $180 a barrel if the disruptions persist until late April.

While that would sound like a bonanza for a kingdom still heavily leveraged to oil revenue, it is deeply concerning. Prices that high could push consumers into habits that slash their oil use—potentially for the long term—or trigger a recession that also hurts demand. They also would risk casting Saudi Arabia in the role of profiteer in a war it didn’t start.

If Jews had no money, we would never do this. This isn’t about religion like the poor baws think it is. Hell if satan had trillions, we’d fight angels

Saudis would love oil to see oil @ 180.

They can produce it like $10-12, but they absolutely need it to be @ 75 for their budget.

Brent crude, which is the benchmark referred to in the vast majority of these articles or predictions on "oil prices", still has a LONG way to climb before hitting $180/bbl. Looks to be currently sitting around $107/bbl.

My personal, unprofessional opinion is we'd start to see demand destruction before it climbs another $73.

They like $180/bbl but would rather run their competition out of business if possible.

Can’t undercut West Texas frackers at $180/bbl.

Another word for demand destruction is people can’t afford it.

Yeah, I'm not seeing 180.

That's just a SA wet dream.

And as the article correctly pointed out, while we aren't immune to global supply shocks, we are in much better shape than other countries.

East Asia is going to get the worst of it, they may (kindof already are) see those numbers. Staying above 150 will be a chore as you say because of demand. The US can't handle that for every barrel but some places can and will have to handle it.

We live in a global economy. This is bad for us, too.

It’s truly a mastery and I can respect it. What I can’t respect is how we’ve not learned our lesson in 90 years

We dont import 90% of our supply, like China, of which 12% comes from Iran. They'll get more from Russia @ a premium.

We'll just have to pay more for Temu trash.
