I live in a decent neighborhood, no mansions just decent size houses with a couple acre lots, I had a contractor quote me $36,000 dollars for a stone retaining wall. Since I live in a decent neighborhood this clown is adding to the price because he thinks we are well off. I have context because unknown to the contractor he quoted a friend of mine lower for the same project who lives in a standard cookie cutter neighborhood. Am I crazy to feel this way.

Not at all. Get multiple quotes and ask for labor and materials to be separated.

If you feel the need to do business with this contractor, confront him with both quotes and ask him to explain the cost difference.

Highly unlikely the scope is exactly the same between the two jobs. How much more was your quote than his?

Why not ask the contractor regarding the difference in quotes? Clear with your friend, you will probably be enlightened at the difference in scope. I doubt he is picking and choosing, If anything, he wants the job of the more affluent as he has less risk of getting shafted on payment. If he cant give you legit reasons, you can find another contractor.

If you don't like the price, then get more quotes and use someone different. It's not complicated

thats crazy. stone retaining walls are all pretty much all about $12,000. Doesn't matter the situation or region of the country or type of stone.

I’m not telling you that’s a good quote, but I will tell you the cost of a good retaining wall and a bad retaining wall is pretty significant depending on the slope involved.

Or the length and height of the wall

Haha. So, a 6” high 20’ long wall in sandy soil costs the same as a 10’ high 100’ long wall in heavy clay?

Contractors will very often quote on how badly they want/ need the job OP. If they have a bunch of work they will quote high, if they are in the area already and need work they can be low. Its far from a business where the price for 2 similar jobs is always going to be similar.

Yes living in a more affluent area is often going to get higher quotes. Just get more quotes.

Your neighborhood is a bigger pain in the arse. Thats the price to deal with that.
