It's such a charming game. The self shading graphics were a trendsetter in hindsight.

My daughter beat the HD version on Wii U a couple of years back (She was 11 at the time)... Definitely a proud dad moment.

I always show her older games, but I never force them on her if she doesn't like them. She really took to WW and Luigi's Mansion both as far as GameCube games go.

It has my favorite Zelda song.

Not in my top 5 Zelda Games

1. Ocarina of Time (N64)
2. A Link to the Past (SNES)
3. The Legend of Zelda (NES)
4. Breath of the Wild and Tears of a Kingdom (Switch)
5. Zelda 2 (NES) I loved the challenge as a kid. Played it on the NES where death had real consequences.

Wind Waker, Majora's Mask, and Links Awakening DX would follow.

No, because I have taste.

jk. My favorite is actually Minish Cap, but Wind Waker was good stuff. I just didn’t like how empty the sea felt (and a serious lack of unique islands) and it needed at least a couple more dungeons instead of the triforce fishing and the destroyed island.

I will say the HD version with the addition of the swift sail made the game much better for me. Still not my favorite, but a lot better than the original release.

My favorite from that game is actually the sailing/Great Sea theme. The Castle from Link to the Past is my all time #1 Zelda song.

The Great Sea

Anyway, My top Five:
1) Link to the Past
2A) Breath of the Wild
2B) Ocarina of Time
4) The Legend of Zelda
5) Wind Waker

Seeing a lot more Zelda 2 love in here than I would have expected. That one never really clicked for me. I think I might still have the cartridge, might need to pull it out, blow in it a couple times, smack the old NES a couple times and see if it fires up.

Was not a fan at all when it first came out, but it has grown on me over time. Though it's still 4th-5th on my list at absolute most.

Also for those that put ALttP in their top games or just like the 2D games in general, I strongly encourage you to play Oracle of Ages and Seasons if you haven't already. Vastly underrated games.

It holds up exceedingly well. Very tight controls like so many NES games. I think when people don’t try to compare it to other Zelda games and just appreciate it as a fun side scrolling Nintendo game it’s a lot more enjoyable.

Also hard as hell without completely losing you.

Played them but I was never a big handheld guy, outside the Coleco/Mattel sports games.

Only thing I remember is one was heavy on puzzles, the other was more combat.

Maybe swap one and two, and maybe swap three and four but that's basically my order as well. Maybe swap # five for Link's Awakening

In a world where OOT, LTTP, and BoTW exist, there's no way it can ever be considered the best Zelda IMO.

If you grew up playing it as your first Zelda game as a child, I can definitely see how it might be one's personal "favorite" though, just for sentimental reasons.

Didn't like the artstyle when it came out, still don't to this day. I think it was chosen far more to hide the GameCube's lack of power compared to their competitors that generation than for we really want this athestic reasons. Cartoony graphics are less demanding and they have a certain universal charm and they hold up well over time. It's a trick they still use to this day with modern Zeldas like BTOW. I'm not against the cartoon athestic in some games, but Zelda was always one of the slightly more "mature" Nintendo franchises and I didn't like it as a choice for that franchise.

Regardless, it's a great game. Good dungeons, still the classic Zelda formula. The ocean is pretty boring but with warping it's bearable. It helps that the music is is good.

Any Zelda fan should def. play it at some point, even if put off by the graphics.

My top 5:

Ocarina of Time
Breath of the Wild
Link Between Worlds
Tears of the Kingdom
Link to the past

I have not had the chance to play Twilight Princess yet

I would place windwaker in the next tier along with Minish Cap

I did not enjoy Majoras mask as much as I’d hoped

Wind Waker is a good game, but it doesn't belong anywhere near the top of a Zelda ranking.

It's part of the Nintendo Classics lineup in the NES library if you have Nintendo Switch Online (and you really should).
