How old were you before you realized there were towns with hardly any black people?

For me it was when I went to Pigeon Force and Gatlinburg when I was 7 or 8. Before that I just figured that everywhere had a bunch of black people. It was a shock to the system.
It's still sort of a shock to the system when I go somewhere where you can drive around all day and not see any black people. Even though black people can be aggravating sometimes, not seeing any makes me realize I'm a long ways from home and makes me a little anxious.

This is mainly a Louisiana board. There's no way I'm the only one who thought this when I was a little kid lol.

I grew up in one and currently reside in one as well.
As you can imagine, the opposite was true in my case. I was somewhat shocked that there are places with the inverse type of demographics when I moved to Baton Rouge for college.

You must have been living under a rock all of that time

I wasn't exactly upwardly mobile as a small child.

I grew up in Central California. We don't have a lot of black people here.
ETA: My son's school district is 3.2% black.

The only way someone would see almost zero percent is if you visited Wyoming, Maine, Montana, etc.

Oh, conservative, low-ctime areas...

Someone I knew went to Montana and told me there was a county w/no black people at all. Locals had heard there was a black family in the next county, though they were not certain.
I told this to a guy from Cajunland and he called me a liar. He refused to believe such places exist.

And where are these mythical towns of which you speak?

From South La and I know exactly what you’re talking about. But treading lightly here.

Ask a similar thing on a Southern Jaguars Board.

I had the opposite realization OP. I thought growing up all black people lived in urban big cities.
I was shocked to find tiny small rural towns in deep southern IL, and lot of Mississippi that were all black. Nobody nowadays thinks of “country people” as black but there are places where that is exactly the case
