This was auctioned as part of the Jim Irsay collection. The guitar was used on about all of Pink Floyd’s greatest recordings. It is also a parts caster.

Garcia’s Tiger Guitar brought 11 million to Derek Trucks. Lots of other guitar auction records were also shattered. Video is from Casino Guitars youtube where they break down the highlights.

Derek Trucks did not buy Tiger. A Chicago collector bought it

No, because the black strat was previously owned by David Gilmore. Irsay bought it in 2019 for $4M. He bought Garcia’s Tiger guitar in 2002 for $960,000. Helluva return on investment.

False. Although Derek did play it on stage the next night.

I mean, there's only one of them and once you own it, you get to set the price. The only overhead is storing and insuring it.

I looked at the prices that were proposed at the time the 2019 auction was coming up and just laughed.

They estimated The Black Strat would go for $150k (actually just under $4m). Gilmour's primary acoustic guitar since 1971, a Martin D-35 (mainly known for Wish You Were Here) was estimated at $10k to $20k ( , fetched $1.1m and would easily double or treble that today). The 12-string (also known from Wish You Were Here) D-28 was estimated at $5k to $10k and fetched half a million.

I mean, they were just way off base with their estimates (I guess the auction house really didn't know the market or lowballed to drive up more eyes and interest). Gilmour is a generational talent and immensely influential on all subsequent guitar players. As an example, a Gibson jumbo he bought off a Dire Straits member not named Mark Knopfler and really only noted for use on The Division Bell was estimated at $3500 to $5500 and sold for almost a quarter of a million dollars.

And every one of them would easily double those 2019 prices today if they haven't been damaged or altered. In some cases 3x to 4x (obviously with The Black Strat being one of the most iconic guitars in rock history).

I wonder why gilmour sold off those guitars in the first place? He can’t need the money

Google to the rescue

David Gilmour sold his iconic "Black Strat" in 2019 to raise funds for charitable causes, specifically to combat the climate crisis, donating over $21 million from his 126-guitar auction to ClientEarth. He believed the instruments had served him well and it was time for them to serve others

It probably wasn't about the money. How many guitars does a guy like David Gilmour own? You can only play one at a time.

He had ~150 before the auction in 2019. He sold 127 and had about 20 left. I'm sure he has acquired some in the intervening years.

150 seems like a lot. Twenty or so seems manageable. Doesn't Joe Bonamassa own a bajillion guitars?
