One of the most popular men’s basketball players in the Southeastern Conference recently bought a million-dollar lake house in North Carolina and has gotten so wealthy from his name, image and likeness he could retire from work now if we wanted, according to his father.
But this particular player isn’t a top NBA prospect like Arkansas point guard Darius Acuff or big Tennessee forward Nate Ament.
Instead, he’s a short freshman bench player on the 14th-place team in the league.
His name is Eli Ellis, a guard for South Carolina who has more than 2.1 million followers combined on social media, ranking him No. 5 nationally in Division I men’s college basketball, more than double of any other player in the SEC, according to NIL marketplace company Opendorse.
[This means he’s already made a fortune off of his NIL.
“He actually could retire now,” his father and former coach Jeremy Ellis told USA TODAY Sports. “He’s been making a lot of money since really 10th grade. And he doesn’t spend it.”

As for what's so appealing about this kid, I couldn't tell you, the article doesn't really get into it.

Can we have a serious conversation on how capitalism is no longer allocating resources properly?

I’d argue it’s working just fine. Guy finds he has something considered to have value to the public. Guy markets himself and the public responds with engagement.
Capitalism seems to be working fine, but what is considered valuable today is drastically different that what it was 20 or more years ago. Value changes over time, but the process itself is relatively the same.

Never heard of this guy and he has no endorsements. These stories are just lies. It reminds me of NFTs from 5 years ago.

So why does this guy have followers on social media?

Who decides what proper allocation is?

LSU had an influencer on the team last year warming the bench. Kind of pathetic

He's 18, no way he could make it without some dumb arse decisions ruining his plans.
More likely he's broke by 30

Capitalism relies on rational actors. If everyone goes crazy then it doesnt work.

Yeah that NIL is getting re-evaluated after the season
What this new landscape is going to do is put everyone where they really belong… whether guys get cut or they just leave

IDK, social media influencers can make a lot of money dude. They get paid to push products on their social media handles. While not what you would think of as "endorsements" they pay all the same. I know LSU had a walk-on bball player that was featured on that amazon prime doc on NIL. He was making bank and never played either.
