Wow. This is more than concerning.

quote:

The deeply controversial measure, concocted by Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary David Lammy, would upend a millennium of English legal tradition in a supposed bid to reduce the backlog of cases currently waiting to be heard by courts.

The proposed legislation would end the right to be judged by a jury of your peers for cases in which the defendant is facing three years or less in prison. Instead, the fate of the accused would be decided by a single judge

Honestly, I'm not sure I see a lot of issue with this other than the fact that it will almost certainly be expanded by leftists until no one gets a jury trial ever.

Considering recent trends in the UK, if you're white, you're fricked.

Muslim judges would certainly cover up any muslim crimes. This a can of worms they are opening. Can a judge not be biased towards a race, religion, etc. Payoffs to judges is about to explode.

I do.

If they can just remove your right to jury on whim what else can they do? You either have rights or you don’t.

This is so you don’t get a jury when you get jailed for thought crimes and self defense against Muslim rape gangs.

Doing my best Norm MacDonald impression:

Well it’s official: immigrants raping native citizens is LEGAL in the UK

I guess I'd need to know exactly what charges this would encompass, but this sounds like misdemeanor-level stuff to me. Seems like a reasonable step to help fix backlog and maybe speed up the pace of what most people would consider the more important cases and help people actually get their right to a speedy trial.

Misdemeanors carry a maximum of 1 year in the USA or am I wrong? And even then I don’t believe people ever get a full year for them. I’m no lawyer though maybe SFP can help me out.

Make it 6 months instead of 3 years and I’d find it more reasonable other than as you already mentioned it will be expanded

Within the decade, Sharia Law will be so widespread in Britain that it will essentially rule the entire land

Yeah no biggie, just 3.5 years in prison.

Star Chamber:

Evolution: It was heavily abused by the Stuart kings (James I and Charles I) to suppress political opposition, censorship, and to bypass Parliament.

No you're right about the 1 year in the USA. I don't know what the equivalent is in the UK.

The concern in the UK is this would likely mean any cases where they are trying to jail people for memes on social media would never be allowed to go before a jury, which would be outrageous.

That's not always technically the definition but functionally it is. In LA the demarcation is being able to be sentenced "at hard labor' (DOC imprisonment), and our misdemeanor max is typically 6 months. Some jurisdictions have issues with crimes without an "at hard labor" penalty that are more than 6 months and they incorrectly prosecute them as felonies.

Oh thanks for the info baw. Seriously

Worst thing I’ve ever “been” to court for was an under 21 dui that wouldn’t have been a dui had I been 21. I didn’t even go to court because I was deployed and a lawyer I hired just went I guess. I just paid a fine of like 1500$

I had an article on my old website about cyberstalking talking about just this issue (because it has a max of 1 year and no hard labor designation) and I had randoms contacting me from rural parishes around the state over the years asking me to explain to the judge/ prosecutor that it wasn't a felony.
