U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) this week quietly removed two stretches of planned border walls from its map of "Smart Wall" projects in the Big Bend region of West Texas, including one such project slated to run through Big Bend National Park.

CBP did not publicly announce the change and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Earlier this week, the online map showed multiple "primary border wall system" projects planned for the region, including projects that would run through Big Bend National Park and along the southern border in Terrell County.

By late Thursday, the map had been changed to show "detection technology" projects planned in the national park and areas further east. The move amounts to a reversal back to CBP’s original plans; that stretch of the border had been slated for only technology upgrades in the fall, before border wall projects were added in mid-February.

No Big Bend Wall, a newly-formed opposition group, said in a Friday press release that while community outcry seems to be having an effect on border wall plans, advocates are urging diligence moving forward considering the lack of information from CBP.

“While this shift from potential ‘physical wall’ to ‘detection technology’ is a signal that the public pressure is working, lack of transparency means we don't know if this is a real policy shift or a tactical one designed to lower our guard,” the group said.

Friends of Big Bend Ranch State Park, a non-profit group that supports the 300,000-acre park, issued a statement this week arguing that a steel wall will have negative long-term environmental and economic impacts to the region.

This is a positive development to get the project stopped. Time to keep the pressure on the Trump admin to reverse course.

There aren't many border crossing through Big Bend. It's a mountain terrain. Most border crossers don't pack climbing gear.

As of early 2026, the Big Bend sector of the U.S.-Mexico border has experienced relatively low numbers of unauthorized crossings compared to other regions, with 734 migrant encounters recorded by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the area for the fiscal year to date, representing less than 3% of total southern border encounters.

A wall in Big Bend would be a huge travesty. Both sides of the aisle are opposing this.

As someone whose rafted and hired in big bend. I oppose that. Also the border crossing in big bend was unmanned. You show your passport to a camera and they let you walk across. They had a small town in the other side with some cantina.

Based. I visited over Christmas break with my girlfriend and had the same thought. It's a beautiful area and Santa Elena and Boquillas Canyons were my favorite spots.

I bought this piece from an artist in Austin, Pierce & Paint Blue Skies at Santa Elena.

Death In Big Bend: True Stories of Death & Rescue in Big Bend NP

This book by Laurence Parent^^ has a story of 3 guys who tried to cross in the summer and basically boiled alive in the desert as they got lost and had minimal supplies.

Nature is a barrier here. Absolutely zero reason to ruin this wilderness when nature provides a better deterrent.

Most of the border crossings are well Southeast of Big Bend.

Man I love these books. I own the Grand Canyon one, and I've listened to the Yellowstone one. I couldn't put the Grand Canyon one down. I need to get the ones for the other NPs, including Big Bend.

But there are areas where a few trails and even a road come up close to the river. Some seasonal creeks that aren’t always steep drops on both sides. All 118 miles do not look like the picture with steep drops of both sides (actually could be a place or 2 in the picture). Those would still be facing extremely harsh terrain and obviously not flat and require a guide who knows the area, but mountain climbing gear isn’t required for the places they go.

They had 3,096 apprehensions in FY 2025. Dems have shown an inability to enforce the border, so building structures helps do what they will not.

6% of the entire land border with Mexico is currently apprehending 3% of illegals for entire land border with Mexico which is also just around 10% of illegals detained in Texas for same FY year to date. The 734 was from October thru January which would trend to be another reduction if flow is consistent and similar in remaining months, but before Biden’s Autopen started waving them and handing out temporary protections and social security numbers like candy on Halloween this area used to see traffic in greater numbers. Improvements have to be made across the border to avoid the weak points that will see increases and be Dem proof, or Dems need to elect Dems who support our national sovereignty if they can still find any.

EDIT: Fixed length of big bend border.

That’s from 2023 which would include Biden’s Autopen handing out freebies and waving all in. Of course they would start to shift and avoid using the harshest climate when no one was stopping them elsewhere.

You want to destroy a wild landscape and a beautiful park for this?

Is it really worth it to you? Surely you aren't serious.

Is there nothing sacred to you folks? Why do you seek to destroy what little remains of the natural world?

Big Bend border is only 118 miles long. 5% of the total of 2,000 miles of border. Most border crossing are near Brownsville near the Gulf of 'Merica.

If people are being honest, prohibiting water stations and amenities along many border areas would more effectively reduce attempts than a wall.
