I am taking my family (2 kids) to the Southern Rim in early April, but for only a day trip. We will be spending the majority of our time in Sedona. I am reading on-line about an Orange shuttle to South Kaibab trail and wanted to know if this was a good option ? My kids are 14 and 10, so moderate hiking should be fine.

Says we would park at visitor center and walk to Mather Point for pics and then hop on the orange shuttle to S. Kaibab trail in the morning.

Just left there yesterday. Drove up from Sedona and watched the sunrise at Mather point. Don’t use the shuttles but everything was close to the center and seemed clearly marked. Expect it to be busy AF, though.

Wanted to see if anyone else had any thoughts or suggestions for a GC trip in general for early April ?

There's plenty to do but we drove from Sedona to GC for a day as we had been to GC before. There are many places to stop for views that's why the car was great. If you have never been it is amazing no doubt but the real beauty is how much it changes over the courses of a day. Also, you have to go through Flagstaff to get there so you can stop there for lunch or dinner. Enjoy.

We are doing a short trip from Sedona in June, but with my elderly mother not kids.

We are going to drive to Williams, AZ and take the Grand Canyon Railway up. It is slower than driving and eats up time at the park if you don't stay overnight. My mom cant walk much and we have all been before, so we aren't worried about hiking and all that.

It might be fun for the kid, but they might also be at the age where they think its lame.

We went with our two boys (9/12 at the time) in April. We did similar. Stayed a few nights in an air bnb in Kachina Village south of flagstaff. That gave us a midway point to do the Gc and Sedona.

Did Mather’s point and shuttle to the Rim Trail. Hiked down for a few hours and back up. Explored a little and drove out along the road that hugs the canyon eastward. Stopped at grand view point for almost two hours watching sunset.

Bus had some weight but it was manageable. Probably a half hour due to crowds. I feel like we got a very full experience just in one day

I don’t know about bike rentals OP, but when I was there I thought biking around would be a great way to see it. You don’t have to wait on a bus and it’s very flat along the top of the canyon. The bus routes take you to the different scenic views and there’s a couple trail heads. I don’t know anything about South Kaibib. That’s a good age of kids to go, I went with kids that were like 3,5, and 8 and that was too young imo there was too many damn drops with no barriers for kids that young, lol.

I’m sure I’ll get downvoted for this and the Grand Canyon is amazing, but you basically are on top of the rim at different views, or you walk down into it and then back up. There’s not a whole more more to it, I wouldn’t stress on a day trip.

I also am shocked by the amount of people that drive in and out in the same day. It’s a long arse ways from anything

From Flagstaff, take US 89 North to AZ 64 and come into the park from the east at Desert View. Will be much less crowded and the views from there are just as good.

If you want to go to the main entrance, you can drive along 64 which follows the south rim into Grand Canyon Village.

The Very Large Array on US 60 is a low-attendance fascinating visit. It's on your way if driving out from Louisiana...LINK

The sight of 27 9-story tall parabolic antennae spread out on tracks 13 miles long aimed up listening to outer space is extremely impressive. You or your kids may have already seen them in sci-fi movies. We used to do some damned good stuff without our tax dollar.

If people have little kids then The Polar Express would be perfect. Train leaves from Williams, kids wear their pajamas, Santa and his helpers serve hot chocolate during the trip.

The Polar Express runs November thru January.

Early April means you could hike down to Skeleton Point on the South Kaibob and back without much problem assuming everyone is in decent shape.

Still should start earlier rather than later though.
