Which part of the island to stay at/around for BVI ?
Caribbean beach resorts for wife and kids (2)
Posted by PCBourbon on 4/16/25 at 1:32 pm
I am looking for something different this year and looking for ideas/suggestions for this summer or a possible Thanksgiving vacation. Details below: wife and kids (19 & 14) we all have passports and TSA pre-check.
Traveled to before: St. John (USVI) and Cayman Islands as a family for each. We enjoyed both and each trip we rented homes (VRBO) vs a resort. We enjoyed both, but all of us will say St. John was the best. Not against returning to St. John, but wanted other suggestions.
Typical trip: Lots of beach days, have rented boats to view the island, typically rent a vehicle and drive around the island vs taking taxis/ubers. We will eat out about half the time, but don't mind cooking at rent house (assuming we do that again vs a resort).

IPad for college student
Posted by PCBourbon on 11/20/24 at 4:09 pm
My 19 year old daughter is wanting an Ipad for college, while i do not think it is truly needed since her 2 year old laptop is working fine and i am leaning to getting her one for Christmas and BD combo gift.
Any recommendations on the Ipad type ? She has an Iphone and iwatch currently. Her laptop is not an Apple.
Thanks in advance.....

re: Homes to stay at (Grand Cayman)

We stayed at Coral Kai (see below link) in June of 2023 with our extended family. Had about 6 adults and 5 kids for this home. We were in Rum Point area, which is North point of Grand Cayman and fairly secluded. We did tour the more popular areas, 7 mile beach etc, but really enjoyed our time and area. Were very close to Sting Ray tours as well.

I smoked about a pack a day from 1997-2011… Last one was on 12/31/2011 around 11:00 pm.. I wanted kids and wanted to stop before trying.. I changed my habits and tried to not drink for 2-4 weeks (drinking & smoking easy way to fail)… Have not even had a drag of a cigarette since 2011..
My son was born in November of 2012, so it worked !

re: My Bank Called Inquiring RE Venmo Transactions

New tax rules for 2024 with Venmo and Paypal etc. See below:
For tax year 2024, the IRS will transition to a threshold of $5,000 with the $600 limit going into effect the following year, meaning that business transactions that surpass $600 will trigger the 1099-K form, which Venmo, Paypal, Cash App and others will create.
Unfortunately, paying taxes on payment app business income isn’t tied solely to the 1099-K form.

September 18th is the next meeting and projected rate cut day.
Getting back into Golf/lessons
Posted by PCBourbon on 6/10/24 at 9:08 am
My 10 year old son is showing an interest in golf and i have not played in a number of years and was not very good when i played. I would like to start taking some lessons and get my game decent where i can play with him over the next few years and hopefully both of our games improve. I am in the Baton Rouge area and looking for lessons/suggestions for myself ? I can probably commit to once a week lessons to get started and buy some new clubs if needed.
Holmes Creek/Cypress Springs

Has anyone been to the above near Vernon, Florida? Going to Blue Miuntain Beach for a week and looking at this place as a break from the beach for a day. Looks like it’s about 45 minutes from Blue Mountain. Would be taking about 6 kids with ages ranging from 6-14 years old
Did your kids stay overnight last year at Istrouma camp ?

I believe Hancock Whitney has a 1 time close construction loan option. I would explore this if they still offer it.
Summer camps for kids in Greater BR area
Posted by PCBourbon on 3/12/24 at 8:38 am
Hoping it is not too late already, but looking for some summer camp options for my 11 year old son this summer. He will be busy with summer baseball, but should finish up in early to mid-June and we have an early summer vacation scheduled late June, so really only looking for July options if possible. He is normal 11 year old that likes the outdoors and sports.
re: HELOC options in Louisiana?

Keep in mind I only commercial loans now, so not the best source on where to get unsecured personal loans. A quick google search is showing Lending tree with up to $50k unsecured loans. I would read the fine print and see how much you can qualify for. Keeping it unsecured will hurt your repayment terms, meaning you can only probably go 4-5 years in length vs longer with a home equity option.
I would still strongly suggest going an unsecured option. Keeping the term short will give you a high monthly note, but you want it like that. Keeping it short will hurt, but it should so you can get rid of it quicker.
If you don't quality for the full amount then consider refinancing whatever has the worst terms (higher interest rate, maturing soon, etc).
Good luck

Give me a breakdown of the loans (auto, cc, medical, etc)
How is your credit ?

Few things from a banker:
-A HELOC is a floating rate line of credit that is secured with your home (secured). Some banks might offer a teaser rate, but that rate will go up and will be variable.
-If you truly want a home equity option (would not be my 1st or 2nd option) you probably want a Home equity loan, which gives you a fixed rate vs a floating rate (HELOC).
-You did not disclose what the $52k in debt was, so assuming it is cc debt then that is debt is probably unsecured. I would explore other options than securing a new loan with your home as collateral

Tech advisors:
My lack of gaming knowledge should be clear now. I agree with you all about finding out what his friends have/play, which I still need to do. I promise you all i will not attempt to buy him a 360. That gaming system must have been stuck in the back of my brain. If i choose to get him a new gaming system (I am pushing for a new BMX bike) it will be one his friends use and use some of the recommendations made.
Thanks for your advice/help.

My son is turning 11 next month and is wanting one of the above (not both). He has a Switch currently for about 2 years, but seems to play on it less.
Most of his friends have either of the above. Thanks in advance..

re: Cayman Islands

While the family and I enjoyed our time in Cayman and Rum Point we will probably not be back. We preferred St. John over Cayman and looking at St. John again or possible British VI as well.
The sea grass was mainly near shore, so only had to walk maybe 10-15 yards out to get past it. Our house had kayaks which made it easy to snorkel all around the shore near the house at Rum Point. The reefs were pretty good by our house.
Yes you need to rent a car. Not many cabs and no Ubers there. Get ready to go thru many roundabouts, not many red lights out there. Not sure about renting a boat. We just had a charter.

Grand Canyon and Sedona
Posted by PCBourbon on 10/2/23 at 1:44 pm
Might be taking the wife and 2 kids (17 and 11) to GC and Sedona this year in early April and looking for advice.
-Plan the trip myself or book one on-line with guided tours?
-If I read correctly we can only do the South rim this time of year vs both North and South-correct ?
-Any must dos in Sedona and GC ?
-How many days do i need for both Sedona and GC ? I was thinking 2 days for each, but was not sure.
We would fly into Phoenix is my guess and start the trip in Sedona, but open for suggestions and advice ? The wife and i are in decent shape and good for basis hikes for us and the kids.
