Probably the most famous here is the KK's Corner murders because rumors have persisted for years that the Sheriff's son was involved in the drug trade and had a hand in it.

quote:

The KK’s Corner murders took place in the early morning of July 6, 1997. Three people—store employees Staci Reeves and Mark Patrick “Marty” LeBouef, and 14-year-old Nicole Guidry—were shot to death inside the store’s cooler during what investigators described as an apparent armed robbery. Thomas Frank Cisco Jr. was the only person ever convicted. His original conviction and death sentence were later overturned by the Louisiana Supreme Court due to a conflict of interest involving his court-appointed attorney. Years later, Cisco pleaded guilty to three counts of manslaughter and received a 90-year sentence. The case resurfaced decades later when Cisco was briefly granted parole before it was rescinded.

Beyond the crime itself, the case became highly charged locally due to rumors involving drugs, corruption, and law enforcement. According to KPLC reporting, one persistent rumor was that the sheriff’s son, Richard McElveen, resembled a composite sketch circulated early in the investigation. Authorities repeatedly stated there was no evidence tying him to the murders. He was interviewed, provided samples, took a polygraph, was not identified by the key eyewitness in a photo lineup, and was said to have an alibi supported by multiple witnesses.

Drug-related speculation entered the discussion largely through community inference and Cisco’s own changing statements. In later years, Cisco claimed heavy drug use and financial desperation, and at one point alleged that Richard McElveen had offered him money to kill Staci Reeves because she “knew too much.” Investigators said that claim could not be substantiated and rejected it as unsupported. While rumors persisted, official reporting consistently states that investigators found no concrete evidence linking the sheriff’s son to the KK’s Corner murders, and publicly ruled him out.

The most shocking IMO had to be the murder of four-year-old Mary Jean Thigpen in 2001

quote:

The murder of Mary Jean Thigpen occurred in November 2001 in Moss Bluff, Louisiana. The four-year-old was abducted from outside her home, sexually assaulted, and stabbed to death, with her body later found in a wooded area near Lebleu Cemetery Road. Jason Manuel Reeves was arrested, tried, and convicted of first-degree murder, with evidence at trial showing he was responsible for the abduction and killing. In 2004, Reeves was sentenced to death by lethal injection. He remains alive on Louisiana’s death row, as his execution has never been carried out. Although execution dates were set in the past, they were stayed by the courts, and Reeves has continued to pursue appeals and post-conviction relief. As of the most recent reporting, his death sentence remains in place, but he has not been executed and continues to challenge it through the legal system.

The state is still housing the scumbag and has tried a few times to schedule his execution

To make matters worse, her dad was killed by a drunk driver in a car accident in 2004.

Murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom

quote:

Channon Gail Christian, aged 21, and Hugh Christopher Newsom Jr., aged 23, were a couple from Knoxville, Tennessee, United States. They were kidnapped on the evening of January 6, 2007, when Christian's vehicle was carjacked. The couple were taken to a rental house. Both of them were raped, tortured, and murdered.[1][2][3] Four men and one woman were arrested, charged, and convicted in the case. In 2007, a grand jury indicted Letalvis Darnell Cobbins, Lemaricus Devall Davidson, George Geovonni Thomas, and Vanessa Lynn Coleman on counts of kidnapping, robbery, rape, and murder.[4][5][6][7][8] Also in 2007, Eric DeWayne Boyd was indicted by a federal grand jury of being an accessory to a carjacking, resulting in serious bodily injury to another person and misprision of a felony.[8] In 2018, Boyd was indicted on state-level charges of kidnapping, robbery, rape, and murder.[9]

Four of the five defendants (Eric Boyd, Letalvis Cobbins, Lemaricus Davidson, and George Thomas) had multiple prior felony convictions.[10] After a jury trial, Davidson was convicted and sentenced to death by lethal injection.[11][12] Cobbins and Thomas were convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole.[13][14][15][16] Vanessa Coleman was convicted of facilitating the crimes and sentenced to 53 years.[17] Eric Boyd was convicted at the federal level and sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for being an accessory after the fact to carjacking.[18][19] He was convicted on state level charges over a decade later in 2019.[20]

I would figure it would be the serial killings from Derrick Todd Lee and Sean Vincent Gillis going on at the same time. Rare to have two serial killers in the same city operating at the same time.

On January 15th, only a few days after arriving in Tallahassee, Bundy entered the Chi Omega sorority house located at 661 West Jefferson Street through a back door with a faulty lock. He beat Margaret Elizabeth Bowman with a piece of wood as she slept and choked her with a nylon stocking. Next, he entered the room of Lisa Janet Levy, beat her unconscious, bit her on the buttock, and sexually assaulted her with a hairspray bottle. He also attacked two other victims, Karen Chandler and Kathy Kleiner, who survived. After fleeing the sorority house, he ran west to Dunwoody Street, in some sort of psychopathic frenzy, where he broke into the apartment of Cheryl Thomas, another FSU student, and beat her. She survived but was left with permanent disabilities. Bundy then, like the vampire he was, slinked off into the night before the sun came up. On February 8th, driving a van stolen from FSU, he approached a 14-year-old girl in Jacksonville but was frightened away. While driving back to Tallahassee he kidnapped and murdered 12-year-old Kimberly Dianne Leach, who had long dark hair parted in the middle, in Lake City. Her body was found weeks later near the Suwannee River State Park. Bundy then returned to Tallahassee. On February 12th, Bundy stole a pastel-colored Volkswagen beetle, a car he preferred since they were so ubiquitous. A few days later, he was stopped by Pensacola Police Officer David Lee after a check revealed the Volkswagen he was driving was stolen. After a foot chase and fight, he was taken into custody. A search of the vehicle resulted in identification credentials of female FSU students and stolen credit cards. The officer reported that Bundy said, “I wish you had killed me.”

If this wasn't a HATE Crime I'm not sure what is. My daughter lived a few blocks away and her mom would let her walk to the store down near where this took place. This wasn't a terrible neighborhood until properties started being bought up and rented out.

My wife was friends with all the parties involved in this case. The grocery store is about 200 yards from my in-laws house.

'How does a man wind up being convicted of committing a murder at a grocery store when no body, no weapon, and no DNA links him to the scene? That is exactly what happened to Mario Casciaro in 2013 when he was convicted of killing 17-year-old Brian Carrick, who was Casciaro's former co-worker and fellow stock boy 11 years earlier.'

I'm sure I am probably missing a more obvious one, but the Taco Bell murder in 2001 still gets talked about in south Bossier to this day.

Assassination of Huey Long at the State Capitol building trumps this, though Seale comes to mind due to recency.

His own body guard accidentally shot him. The Dr was a scapegoat. He was there to fight long, unarmed.
