Channon Gail Christian, aged 21, and Hugh Christopher Newsom Jr., aged 23, were a couple from Knoxville, Tennessee, United States. They were kidnapped on the evening of January 6, 2007, when Christian's vehicle was carjacked. The couple were taken to a rental house. Both of them were raped, tortured, and murdered.[1][2][3] Four men and one woman were arrested, charged, and convicted in the case. In 2007, a grand jury indicted Letalvis Darnell Cobbins, Lemaricus Devall Davidson, George Geovonni Thomas, and Vanessa Lynn Coleman on counts of kidnapping, robbery, rape, and murder.[4][5][6][7][8] Also in 2007, Eric DeWayne Boyd was indicted by a federal grand jury of being an accessory to a carjacking, resulting in serious bodily injury to another person and misprision of a felony.[8] In 2018, Boyd was indicted on state-level charges of kidnapping, robbery, rape, and murder.[9]

Four of the five defendants (Eric Boyd, Letalvis Cobbins, Lemaricus Davidson, and George Thomas) had multiple prior felony convictions.[10] After a jury trial, Davidson was convicted and sentenced to death by lethal injection.[11][12] Cobbins and Thomas were convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole.[13][14][15][16] Vanessa Coleman was convicted of facilitating the crimes and sentenced to 53 years.[17] Eric Boyd was convicted at the federal level and sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for being an accessory after the fact to carjacking.[18][19] He was convicted on state level charges over a decade later in 2019.[20]

On January 15th, only a few days after arriving in Tallahassee, Bundy entered the Chi Omega sorority house located at 661 West Jefferson Street through a back door with a faulty lock. He beat Margaret Elizabeth Bowman with a piece of wood as she slept and choked her with a nylon stocking. Next, he entered the room of Lisa Janet Levy, beat her unconscious, bit her on the buttock, and sexually assaulted her with a hairspray bottle. He also attacked two other victims, Karen Chandler and Kathy Kleiner, who survived. After fleeing the sorority house, he ran west to Dunwoody Street, in some sort of psychopathic frenzy, where he broke into the apartment of Cheryl Thomas, another FSU student, and beat her. She survived but was left with permanent disabilities. Bundy then, like the vampire he was, slinked off into the night before the sun came up. On February 8th, driving a van stolen from FSU, he approached a 14-year-old girl in Jacksonville but was frightened away. While driving back to Tallahassee he kidnapped and murdered 12-year-old Kimberly Dianne Leach, who had long dark hair parted in the middle, in Lake City. Her body was found weeks later near the Suwannee River State Park. Bundy then returned to Tallahassee. On February 12th, Bundy stole a pastel-colored Volkswagen beetle, a car he preferred since they were so ubiquitous. A few days later, he was stopped by Pensacola Police Officer David Lee after a check revealed the Volkswagen he was driving was stolen. After a foot chase and fight, he was taken into custody. A search of the vehicle resulted in identification credentials of female FSU students and stolen credit cards. The officer reported that Bundy said, “I wish you had killed me.”
