... by an old Italian friend who served in the military over there (in diplomatic circles), worked his way up the ladder, is retired now but still very connected.

When he told me this I said, "yeah, wow, didn't think of that. Makes total sense."

Trump and Meloni are very close. Crush close.

Trump may have (I'm just sayin') struck a deal, an agreement (as a favor if you will) not to strike Iran in the lead-up to, or during, the Winter Olympics (hosted by Italy) so as not to distract from the winter games.

Now all gloves are off and Iran knows it.

Any time now.

And our aircraft will be staging and refueling, at least partially, out of Brindisi and Aviano. Our resupply, for our warships, will be steaming out of Naples.

FWIW, in case you are unaware, the UK and Spain have cut us off. France is being coy.

Italy is behind us ... Meloni/Italy has our backs more than any other member of NATO.

Anyways, fwiw, make of that what you will.

I don't mind it, if only because we won't have to wait too long to see if it has legs.

Yeah.

Trump didn't want Olympic athletes answering questions about bombing Iran.
It was one obvious reason for delay (as if giving Iran every opportunity to stop talking and act on diplomacy isn't another reason).
But we've seen this play out last summer in the same fashion.

It could be another 3 weeks, potentially. If not this week, it might be just before the end of ramadan.

I had read this somewhere…..it was not a secret…I assumed it was so as to not have the built in targets of the Olympic venues out there for Iran to bomb….

Not if Italy is hosting them and we need their staging bases to operate effectively.

Not to mention it becomes a massive security issue if Iran decides to start kicking off attacks on civilians when the regime has no other means to fight back.

Islamists have no problem killing innocent people at the Olympics. Intelligence and security probably prevented multiple lone wolf attacks as it was. We will never hear about it, but they happen every Olympics.

Smart move by the US.

Now that the Olympics are over Iran knows it's time to reach a diplomatic solution ... or else.

As the Italians say, "La sabbia nella clessidra sta colando giù."

Loosley translated it means, the sand in the hourglass is almost empty.

Iran is almost out of time to make a deal.

For some of us, and this has nothing to do with NeoCons, this has been coming for a lonnnnnnng time. It's past due. The mullahs in Iran have this coming .... they've been begging for it for 47 years.

War is the ultimate political act. Support for a strike would not be high if it is during the Olympics.

As far as a crush. If you notice that Meloni treats a lot of people the way she treats Trump in public, a look of respect that is almost a flirtatious look. Only if she likes the other person. She isn't very tall so it is almost always an upwards look.

The Imperialist Iranians are the swizzle which stirs discontent and discord in the ME and as you note, for darn near 5 decades

Is time for the Mullahs to be shown the exit and if you don't believe this aging American - simply ask its regional neighbors. Their utility has expired on the shelf

They're definitely going to hit them. Trump is not Obama. He isn't going to let them cross a red line and then back down. He told them that if they killed protestors that he would hit them hard and hit them where it hurts. He is going to wipe them out.

Didn't he give them a deadline to "make a deal?" When was that up? Last I heard they said they would rather go to war.

Big mistake.

Also, I have to think that Trump wanted to wait until after the State of the Union address tomorrow night. He is going to focus on all the accomplishments from the last year and if we had already attacked Iran, that would overshadow everything he wants to say.

So, I think we will hit Iran this weekend.

Meloni is savvy, she kept a low profile after the opening ceremonies.

If you remember she had a high level meeting with Vance, Qatar’s foreign minister, and the Polish President right before the opening ceremonies at the Royal Palace in Milan and terminated with the quickness the environmental protests and rail sabotage that were attempted at the beginning of the games.

We are clearly stalling to give the Ford carrier group time to setup.
