Never thought we would see another baseball coach even in the same universe as Skip. Jay is the heir apparent I never thought we would see.

This must be how Bama fans feel about Bear and Saban.

Does that make Paul Mainieri Gene Stallings and Smoke Laval Frank Perkins? Who gets to role play as Mike Dubose?

A sport that’s king compared to a sport 90% of people couldn’t care less about.

You’re an idiot. What does the level of popularity of the sport have to do with the OP’s analogy. He wasn’t comparing the two sports. He was comparing the impact of the first two coaches on their sport and school versus the potential impact of the following two coaches on their sport and school.

You are on an LSU website where most posters are football and baseball fans. Crapping on one sport to gain support for a failing basketball program is not gonna be effective for you.

Folks will give you shite about the title - as they should. However, the content is correct, albeit very premature.

It is widely accepted that Saban surpassed the Bear as GOAT. It isn't that clear cut in baseball. Objective and subjective arguments can be made for Dedeaux, Augie, and Skip as the GOAT. There is no doubt these 3 are on college baseball's Mount Rushmore and will remain for a long time - potentially forever.

Therefore, this is the universe you look to put Jay in after 4 years. At this point, he is a damn strong candidate, and 1 of only 2 still coaching, but it is premature. Via an AI estimate there have been approximately 1500 coaches total that have had a chance to win a natty: 3 have won more than 3, 4 have won 3 (P. Casey being the most recent), and 10 have won 2 (with T. Corbin being the only other active coach).

Cumulatively, 43 of 1500 coaches have won a national title in baseball (2.87%). However, the aforementioned 17 coaches accounted for 52 natties or 67%. Jay currently exists in an elite class of coaches with 2 or more championships, comprising of 17 of 1500 coaches all time (1.1%).

To add a bit more context, the average amount of seasons between these coaches 1st and second natty was 3.75 to 4.35 years (depending upon how you account for A. Lopez and Augie at CSF and Texas). Regardless, the trend is this: across these 17 coaches that have multiple national championships the overwhelming majority win their first and second within 4 years or across 1 to 2 recruiting classes. The 3 GOATS did it across multiple recruiting classes, years, and decades.

Thus, while we can quantify that Jay Johnson is an elite coach and in the top 1.1% all time - based upon results, it is premature to put him in the same universe as Skip, Augie, and Dedeaux.

ChatGPT is powerful. Nice work. I would add though, only Augie did it 5 times in 4 separate decades with 2 separate teams. This is why I always felt that Augie was every bit as good of a coach that Skip was. Skip never had to win in the new format. Augie did it twice and took Texas in 2009 to the brink of another title considering what it took to win with the heroics of DJ LeMeheiu in Game 1.
Like him or not, call him a drunk or whatever, he was a great baseball coach.

ChatGPT only got me to the 1500 coaches estimate.

Going back to the subjective/objective line, it is not hard to make an objective argument that Augie is the best. Five times, at 2 schools (albeit over 44 total years), and not only 4 decades but 4 to 5 different tourney formats. Skip does have one from the super regional format, but it was before the change to a 3 game final series.

Yeah - I was thinking finals format only not Supers included. You’re right, it is even more compelling. Skip did win one as an assistant at Miami in 1982. He was their pitching coach from what I recall.

Except one of the sports are watched by tens of millions of fans, and the other one, well, you know.......

Johns Hopkins is a national power in lacrosse. I wonder if they have their version of Bear and Saban also???????

I mostly agree with your analogy.

Plus, we have had the privilege of seeing our baseball Saban having a weekly lunch meeting and teaching session with our baseball Bear.

Jay has mentioned several times how much he has learned about coaching college baseball from Skip mentoring him.
