I have hearing aids that help but am occasionally reminded how deaf I am when I attend meetings in large rooms when microphones aren’t in use. At work there is always someone dialing in remotely on meetings and Zoom has a great closed caption feature. Outside of work, it can be frustrating. I went to a local government meeting tonight as a citizen to know what was going on and no one used microphones and most speakers had their back towards me. Doing a quick check, the apps that I found on an internet search were all developed in China and India, so I would have to be convinced there aren’t security concerns. I don’t want all my conversations to be converted to advertisement opportunities tailored for me.

Well I guess at least the replies received keeps me from having to bump the topic to maintain the coveted front page status.

Try asking for closed captions and you might have better luck.

Ramblin,
That's whack you went to a local government meeting and they didn't have microphones or at the very least face the citizens. I would complain about that if I were you- microphones and a speaker can be had as cheaply as a teen girl's karaoke machine off Amazon.

I've come to embrace this. No sense trying to fight it.

I tell my wife I wish I was deaf sometimes.

Damn closed captions somehow get turned on the TV with the accidental click of a button that I'm not familiar with on the remote and then it's fishing through 20 menu options to find the setting to turn it back off.

What local government?

My city has under 30,000 residents and all meetings are streamed on facebook.

The speakers in the board room all face the commission board so they can hear the citizen. They aren't for the benefit of the live audience. But they do pick up audio for the live feed.
