how impressive does that 1980 gold medal look

in comparison to the 2026 in hockey, those guys in 1980 were college amateurs against the soviet union. 5 of them never played in the NHL and only 8 had significant careers in the NHL.

You are not wrong. The odds were stacked against that American team more than yesterday, but it has been 46 years.
The Canadians outplayed us. They had 2:1 shots on goal late in that match, but our boys got it done in the end.
There is no reason in the world that shouldn't be celebrated.

Fundamentally, the 1980 win was truly a miracle. Boys against professional men. I’m assuming the 1960 gold medal was comparable. Maybe the competition wasn’t as good only 15 years after WW2. By 1980, there was no question the USSR and Iron Curtain countries had better teams and athletes than western democracies just based on age and maturity of Eastern bloc countries’ athletes.
I’m proud USA beat Canada yesterday, but it’s not comparable. Clearly these are the best athletes playing hockey, but they are physically, mentally, and emotionally more mature than the 1980 team. And that goes for most of the teams who played this year. I cheered yesterday, but it was definitely different than 46 years ago, for me.
