Closing Ceremony

The joy. The smiling faces. The costumes. The Italian Anthem. The ancient stadium setting. The parade of athletes coming in as a group. The outfits of the athletes. The French national anthem “La Marseillaise” sung by mezzo-soprano Marine Chagnon during the official handover segment as France takes over hosting the next Games.
Magical. Two unforgettable weeks! Then all gone. Having to wait 4 more years.
Real men cry during closing ceremonies!

Alternating them every 2 years makes it more enjoyable then the old 4 years with both in same year.

I thought the setting was amazing, too. The beginning with the opera was very very classy.

I just hope and pray that the next Winter Olympics being in France does not try to repeat an opening ceremony of that massacre that was in Paris of all the Olympics I've been watching and I've been watching since 1972. That was the worst opening ceremony of anything I've ever seen that of what we saw in Paris. Again, hopefully the more country folk of the French out will put on a opening ceremony. Much like what we just seen in Milano and cortina. Very classy very good. Enjoyed both the opening and the closing ceremonies

I get bored with all of the theatrics and performances very quickly. However, I like seeing the athletes and always like to see the cauldron extinguished. Don’t know if I will last another hour, though!

Italy downright slayed these Olympics.

IOC President, Kristy Coventry’s speech to officially close the games was excellent. In particular, thanking the Italian people for their overwhelming hospitality and recognizing the thousands of volunteers without whom none it would be possible.
She had previously given an interview with NBC’s Tirico an hour or so earlier when she lamented the fact that politics have fair too much bearing in everyone’s lives and lambasted the MSM about making it so. Said that these games were a perfect example of what people and sports are capable of achieving when you strive for excellence and not someone else’s ideology. She and the IOC knocked it over the Dolomites.

They did a nice job. If I was over this and it was in America I'd just have Nickelback play

This setting for the ceremony is awesome. Why are there so many empty seats?

I suppose most of the folks have been there for two weeks. Probably have to get back to their normal jobs. Probably all that’s left are locals.

The intimacy of the venue was a positive. But I love the spectacles. Give me Bond out of an airplane with QE2 or the Spice Girls getting driven around the track. AND GIVE ME THE DAMN CALDERON AT THE TOP OF THE STADIUM!!!
I understand things change and it's starting to move back to pre-Beijing '08 presentations. I just loved the cultural stuff in one venue. Give me the closing followed by the next host taking 20 minutes to wet our beaks. I wasn't even that upset with LA just having a video. But today... nothing from France. I hope they learned from the blowback in Paris. I have faith that they have.
Regardless, this morning just overshadowed everything from the past 16 days. I feel for the figure skaters who have a tour with plenty of available seats. I went to a few of the Hamilton tours as a kid but I spent an hour looking at who was on the NHL teams that play within 4 hours of me. (Really bummed out Winnipeg doesn't play near me anymore this season.) And man... what a terrible year to start sharing your political views. Time for Amber Gleen to learn what a real job is. Liu may be woke but I respect her choosing not to make a spectacle of it. I can't name anyone from 1980 outside of the hockey team. Eruzione, Braid, Johnson, Bruton ... Hughes x2, Tkachuk x2, Hellebuyck, Mathews. Those are going to be named people know 40 years from now. Not Illian, Alyssa, and Amber.

Love Kirsty. We are proud to call her an Auburn alum. She's killing it as IOC President.

Why are there so many empty seats?
This is part of what was awesome about the opening and closing - Italy has such an outsized impact on history and world culture that they can just stick to basics and still make it epic.

But it's a World Cup year, so all good.

- Give me an opening/closing ceremony where it’s snowing. Like Lillehammer in 1994.
- Don’t overthink the theatrics. Sometimes these things get a little too weird.
- Get rid of Johnny Weir

Absolutely, her impact as a former athlete herself was very identifiable in these Olympics. She’s not a politician nor bureaucrat, yet has navigated the murk impressively. Auburn should be proud.

The handover to France was stunning. Marine Chagnon’s performance of "La Marseillaise" was easily the highlight of the night.
It's going to be a long four years, but at least we have the Summer Games to bridge the gap soon.
