You can probably make the team in Baton Rouge. Those guys are basically high schoolers

Sign your kids up to play hockey today. It's the greatest youth sport.

If you have the funds.

My nephew is trying out for one of the Chicago AAA bantam teams next month and it would be $12k/season just for dues, not counting travel, equipment, etc.

Fun youth sport to watch though. My 3yo is obsessed with going to the games.

It's better for youth today than 40 years ago.

I had a home rink in my hometown (Stone Mountain, GA)
Away games were Birmingham.

My kid wants to play hockey. Started skating lessons at 3, $180 for 8 week sessions. Public skate passes for extra practice $30 each time we go. Skates for me, $300(last time I got skates was in middle school), skates for him $80 first pair, $120 second pair, already outgrew the first pair, helmet $80, gloves $100, hockey shorts, $75.

Somewhere around $2,000 and 2 years in I have a 5 year old who is a proficient skater, working on his backward skating and ready to buy another couple hundred bucks worth of gear and put a stick in his hand.

He’s played multiple other sports etc and we went about 6 months without skating due to other commitments. He’d be fully proficient in skating if we hadn’t had that break but I’d have spent another $500+ as well.

Not an affordable sport. Our local rink (we live in TN) posts their power bill on the office window for everyone to see, it’s $15k in winter.

Is this cost to keep the ice frozen I’m assuming?

There are rinks for roller hockey too if you are lucky.

When Stone Mountain closed our ice rink, an outdoor roller hockey rink was put in about 7 miles away.

The beauty of outdoor rinks in parks is pickup games (think basketball and tennis).

Dang. Looking up leagues, I didn’t realize that all 4 of the final US team on the ice were Michiganders…

Our ice costs are much cheaper up here, admittedly. Don't compare AAA hockey costs as the norm, that's the extreme high end.

It costs as much for my daughter to play club volleyball on a regional travel team (upper Midwest) as it does for my boy to play hockey. Several grand a year for each.

All youth travel sports are expensive these days.

My cousin’s son plays for the Penguins jr. Elite AAA team. It’s insanely expensive. Basically, they travel mostly to other NHL towns to play their teams. Some of the longer travel is subsidized, but it still 10’s of thousands of dollars a year.

There are leagues that are less demanding, but even then, equipment and ice time are expensive.

I have played in exactly one hockey game.

It was only my third time skating on ice, but I pick things up pretty quick. A bunch of guys rolled in and wanted the rink for a pickup game, and they had odd numbers, so I borrowed gloves, helmet, and a stick.

Scored 2 goals on 3 shots. One was a breakaway and I faked (deked?) strong side, then went backhand through the 5 hole and crashed into the wall.

Have never picked up a stick or been on the ice since.
