Is it too early in the season to spread weed and feed?

I want to get it done this weekend because I’m not going to be able to do it for the next few weeks.

I remember hearing that Valentines Day is the right time to put down preemergent but without fertilizer. Follow up with another application in 30 to 45 days.

I just got notification that soil temps in the Baton Rouge area have reached 70 degrees now.

No, post emergent herbicide is meant to go down on top of the weeds. They haven’t sprouted yet.

Timing the first fertilizer or weed-and-feed application depends on where you are located in the state. Strahan gives the following times for first fertilizer and weed-and-feed applications on St. Augustine and centipede lawns:
– New Orleans, late March.
– Baton Rouge/Lake Charles/Lafayette, late March or early April.
– Alexandria, early April.
– Monroe/Shreveport, mid-April.

This article is from 2011. If you believe the climate is warmer now, maybe it's OK to apply sooner.

I would at least wait until we have considerable rain in the forecast.

And we are likely going to have another freeze, if history repeats itself.

Separate the weed from the feed. Tax day is a good rule of thumb for fert.

I put 100 pounds of annual rye grass on a .3 acre lot two weeks ago and didn't even scratch it in and didn't fertilize it, didn't cover it, haven't watered it...just spread it. Soil was what was left after clearing, no topsoil at all. About 90% of it germinated and it looks like it may need mowing in another couple of weeks. It is already thick enough that the county has told me I can remove the silt fence. If it would last more than a couple of season I wouldn't ever have anything else.
