Brown hits a rope to right field and the right fielder made a very close play that upon replay it was ruled a catch so Brown is out.

However the first base ump rules Brown safe during the play probably thinking the right fielder did not catch the ball.

Meanwhile Simpson at second base does not tag up and heads to third. Once he reaches third he realizes the ball may have been caught (which it was) and heads back to second but not in time before the right fielder relays the ball to the second baseman to what looked like an out. A double play.

However it was not ruled a double play. Why? Was it because the first base umpire called Brown safe at first and tagging up was unnecessary?

Runner relies on the first base umpires ruling of the play. You can’t penalize a runner for going off of what the umpire is telling him.

Your assumption was correct.

On an overturned call, the umpire can place the runners at whatever base they determine is the proper base, in this case, returning them to the second base.

everything after the umpires on field call is based on that call.

in real time, players can only react to that call, not the replay results, so that is how the play is handled.

Makes total sense.

Why? Because the ump said it wasn't a catch, so he went to 3rd without worrying about it.

Wouldn't it be messed up to rule him out for an umpire error? If the ump made the correct call on the field of out then he wouldn't have been in position to be thrown out at second. He would either stay closer to the bag or tag up.

Also, there isn't anything to be upset about if you are the opposing team either. If it's ruled an out live then the other team isn't in position to be tagged out at second.

If anything the incorrect ruling could have cost LSU the ability to tag up.

It was the correct call all around.

I have not seen the play - but that was my first thought - a ball to right field could well be worth tagging up and trying to advance from 2nd - depending on player speed and outfielder arm.

I did not see the play but based on your description of the play it wasn't a force out based on 1B umpire's call. However, if he tagged Simpson he would've been out because it was still a live ball.

It probably was the correct call, but LSU caught a break with it. The runner (Simpson, I think) was returning to 2nd base like he thought the catch was made, even slid back to the base. The 2nd base umpire actually called him out & he left the base & was walking back to the dugout before he jumped back onto 2nd. It was a really screwy play. In fact the only person that “did the right thing” was the 1st base umpire who immediately called no catch, & he got the call wrong.
