As a long-time rider myself, I get frustrated watching throws turn into part of the party gravy that gets vacuumed up by the sweepers. I would honestly rather throw one item a block that I knew someone would bring home rather than voluminous handfuls of crap.

These are the worst offenders to me.

The cheap hula hoops. They get a few spins from excited kids and tipsy dads, then they snap, tangle, or get abandoned. They don't fit in the bead bag, and the volume thrown is turning parades into obstacle courses.

Small throw beads (under 42" 22mm ones}. 90% of them kiss the pavement . Folks only pick them up to throw them back or decorate a tree It's like throwing confetti.

Cheaper plastic toys and sports balls. This used to only be a truck float thing but has made it into many krewes. They're cute for about 30 seconds, then they bounce under a float or get trashed.

It is great to see some of the unique throws folks are inventing each year that at least have a shot ot being kept. I am curious how all the food throws with name brands are escaping the ire of the pearl clutching JP Morrell who was so upset over the THC lobbying Qwerty code on an item,

Zulu created a new market...Throw Air Fryers?

I love to slam a good super ball, and watch the kids, dog, and cats go nuts.

Kids don't even appreciate normal toys these days because they are mass produced and easily obtained through amazon and other big stores, why would they want cheap junk and beads?

I threw a lot of t-shirts and socks this year. We had a lot more practical stuff in our krewe packages as well.

They serve a purpose because they create fun and festiveness during the Mardi Gras season. And more and more useful things are being thrown. For example, Endymion throws purple, gold and green socks and oven mitts

When I nailed that fig with the “F*CK ICE” sign it was worth every penny.

I like the fact we, Endymion, are finally throwing things people can actually use, socks, kitchen towels, oven mitts, T-shirts...

My OP was more from a rider perspective. I do not mind spending the money. I would prefer to spend it on better things.

There is one cheap throw I used to get for a guilty pleasure. Loud, cheap plastic whistles that I would throw en masse to large groups of young kids. Those Tucks loud horns are something that would be just as "fun" to leave something for the parents.

There are some decent ones that get kept: T shirts, cups, coozies, decks of cards, etc.

I threw these this year, and watched most of them hit the ground. Frisbees were a hit.

These are useless. Too light to throw like a football and too football shaped to throw like a regular ball.

I have an odd sense of humor and would always search for something that would make folks scratch their heads.

The dollar store one year had ovulation predictor kits. I bought them out and printed out colorful sticker that had Mardi Gras and the year on them, Folks were chasing me down to get another after I threw them.

II am with you, I view it all as silly and wasteful. Who cares, maybe a very unique token of the year and parade, but other than that, everything goes in a dumpster. But if you threw a few very select things there would be murders over that particular trinket.

We have started throwing more cups and tshirts. Significantly sized plush and anything light-up, people seem to ask for. I inherited some hula hoops, hung them behind me and forgot about them until people started hollering for them. I throw almost no beads now. Only a few really big ones.

From a crowd perspective—my kids’ favorite things caught this year were a huge plush snake, light up rings, and a light up fedora.

Mardi Gras does it's part in supporting the Chinese plastic industry.
