Highly recommend grabbing a tietoc 6in hand held chainsaw off amazon for the hacking part. Roughly $30. Had mine for 3yrs and it keeps eating

For gum, use imazapyr

For kudzu, use metsulfuron methyl

I prefer girdle and spray so I can fell a tree or terminate it standing. Works well with one person on chain saw, the other with a squirt bottle. I’ve used garlon 3A with good results killing gum and hackberry mostly

I thought hacknsquirt was best done in summer and early fall since the sap is headed back toward the roots. I did some in the spring and got very poor results. May've been other factors at play though.

This time if year girdle and spray is more effective than hack and squirt.

Hack and squirt is more effective in the fall(Late August to Early October) when sap is going to the roots in preparation for winter. Leaves will start to turn brown in a couple of weeks.

Craig Harper Cocktail:
1. Triclopyr (Garlon 3A) - 50%
2. Water - 40%
3. Imazapyr (Arsenal AC) - 10%

Mix in that other or it will gel.

Assuming you want to cut saplings I'd use a brush cutter (HD string trimmer) with an 8-9" blade. I use an old Stihl FS250 with a 9" blade that has a chainsaw like cutters on it.

If buying new I think I'd buy an Echo or other, make sure you buy a two stroke and not a 4 stroke/mix engine

I’m seeing guys using a cordless drill with a large bit also these days. Guess they’re drilling down into the tree and filling the hole with Arsenal.

Starting to see sap pushing hard on hornbeams in Wilkinson county, but I think gums are still ripe for hack and squirt. I’ll girdle if the tree is over about 15”. Smaller trees get enough hatchet whacks.

Do you happen to know if these will work with Milwaukee M18 batteries? They look very similar.

We are overrun with Honey Locust trees. I used to go to war with them every spring. They won. They are the most hardy trees I've ever encountered.

I planted thousands of oaks over the years and they seem to be crowding them out finally. Took years though.
