Me and the GF are looking at flying into Portland middle of June, and spending a week or so driving up the coast, finally finishing off in the Seattle area for a WC game....

Anyone done something similar recently?

Any can't miss spots you loved?

Olympic national park
Lake crescent is super nice with some hiking and boat rentals
Rialto beach is all the way at the end but saw a few bald eagles flying around

There are a couple of recent posts you should check out.

You really can't go wrong. Every direction you go there's something beautiful. I recommend Ecola State Park and Astoria. Sunset Beach on the way to Astoria is not as scenic as something like Cannon or Ecola but it's nice for real solitude. Expansive stretches of beach with hardly anyone out there.

make sure you spend at least a couple of days in Olympic. It is utterly unique. If available book a room at kalaloch lodge on the beach. And without question go hike as far as you want on the hoh river trail.

If you want to go to the end of the road, a visit to cape flattery is well worth the effort

I live in Seattle (moved here 11 years ago from the Northshore) and have spent a lot of time on the Oregon coast.

There are so many great spots to check out, but I'll shout out a couple of my favorites.

Astoria, Oregon is one of my favorite cities in the US. I'd love to retire there one day. It's got a charming, walkable downtown but have this cool sort of haunted feel to it. Its beautiful. Stay there for a night or two - have a couple beers Ft. George Brewing and Buoy. Make sure to get breakfast at Blue Scorcher Cafe.

Another one of my favorites is Yachats, OR. It's a bit of a drive south, so maybe you don't want to head down that far - but that area of Hwy 101 (between Yachats and Heceta Beach) is awesome. There are so many areas you can pull over and enjoy lookouts. If you enjoy hiking, its a pretty easy hike up to Cape Perpetua Scenic Area. The view up there is incredible. Pack a lunch and picnic up there.

If you're into fishing, there's a great charter fishing company in Depoe Bay called Dockside Charters. I got seasick almost immediately when I went, so it kind of sucked for me - but for literally everyone else, they were catching tons of fish.

Cannon Beach is cool. Tillamook is also nice - go take a tour of the Tillamook factory.

There are so many other great towns I'm not mentioning. Just know that the towns are, to varying degrees, pretty sleepy. June is still pretty iffy as far as weather goes, so some businesses may tend to close earlier than you would expect.

In Washington, take a ferry up to Whidbey Island or go to Anacortes and go whale watching. Being out on a boat that time of year (assuming no rain) is a blast.

The peninsula is cool. The national parks are great, I just personally don't love the crowds. There's lots to see that doesn't involved being surrounded by bus loads of tourists. Heading north from Oregon you could take the 101 up all the way through Port Angeles and ferry from Kingston to Seattle. It'd add time to your trip, but there's all the outdoorsy stuff you could ever want to do along that route.

As far as Seattle goes, don't feel obligated to stay downtown. Some neighborhoods outside of downtown have great public transit. If you're younger/enjoy bars, consider staying in Capitol Hill near the light rail station. Downtown Seattle is honestly kind of boring. If you stay down there, avoid 3rd Avenue when possible. It's not really dangerous, just gross.

Anyway, if you've got any specific questions, happy to help! Enjoy your time here.

Just so I understand fully.

Your drive up the coast will be the Washington state coastline and not in Oregon?

I highly suggest going there.

Lots of fishermen will be in Neah Bay, OP go down to the end of C dock where the fish cleaning station is at and watch.

You never know, you might see me cutting up fish.

We did a similar trip last summer, except we live in Colorado so drove to Jackson Hole to Hood River, OR (west of Portland) then to La Push, Wa on Rialta Beach.

We stayed at quileute oceanside resort in one of the beach front rentals. Loved it, but food in the immediate area was limited.

We stayed there four nights and hit all of the Peninsula from there, added some driving, but we wanted to be on the beach. Saw someone mention Cape Flattery and we loved it. It is a long drive in and out and there is so much to do you have to pick and choose.

Then we drove down Hwy 101 to Canon Beach to see our daughter.

I feel like the Oregon part of your trip will be a bit rushed, but I would prioritize the Olympic Peninsula as you are.

It's a great trip, enjoy.

I think you've convinced us to drop a day in Forks and stay in Astoria. It sounds like it'd be a good fit.

I am still worried about trying to travel in from Port Angeles to Seattle the day of the game. The game is at noon, and I'm imagining Seattle will be a madhouse that day.

It's a pretty good haul. I would stay in Bremerton Thursday night and load your car on the ferry early Friday morning. It will save you an hour and a half in traffic, and the ferry will release you just blocks from the stadium. I've been on that ferry twice, the first time you see Seattle after making a bend is breathtaking.

I thought visiting Astoria to see the Goonies house and the Kindergarten Cop school was just going to be a fun little side quest, but I too fell in love with vibe.

Sunday Night - Tillamook/Cannon Beach

Stop and eat at the Pelican Brewery in Pacific City on the way up from Florence.

The view is spectacular, and the beer/food is pretty good, too. They'll give you one of those vibrators so you can get a beer and walk on the beach while waiting for a table.

If you have a chance, stop into Port Townsend. Spectacular views and a great historical town. Has a lot of Victorian architecture and is surrounded on three sides by water and mountain views. Truly one of the most beautiful small towns in the country. It is only about 2 hours from Seattle (no ferry), so it could be a destination for the night before the game. It is actually much, much prettier than Port Angeles, because of the way the water wraps around Port Townsend. Port Townsend is also incredibly walkable - you can see pretty much the entire town by foot.
