that’s because it’s illegal as you obviously know. And one of the reasons it’s illegal is that it’s just as easy to distill fatal poison as it is a good batch of shine.

the tradition of home brewing beer and fortified wine though is obviously alive and well

Youtube popcorn sutton.

In addition to being hilarious, he pretty much walks you through a step-by-step guide

Several states allow it although federal law states its illegal. But a lot of people are home distilling and you can buy the equipment at a lot of homebrew stores. Its basically where homebrewing was in the early 70s before Carter signed legislation to legalize it.

You can run old wines and give them new life as something useful.

My nephew and some friends were quite into distilling for a few years due to access to an apple orchard. They bought a still from Australia LINK . A critical technology is knowing when deadly methanol rather than ethanol is coming over. Eventually he stopped and just started buying apple brandy. There is one small wooden barrel aging in the garage to be opened in 2 more years (8 years total).

The other night on TV there was a master distiller competition on TV. It was three people competing against each other with judges to pick the winner. Kind of like baking shows or Forged in Fire. I don't know how they were able to do that show if it's illegal. It was pretty interesting. The judges were guys from the moonshiners show.
