I mean, I've seen figure skating over the years watching the Winter Olympics, but I do not think I have ever seen someone be able to do a backflip in their routine.

That's because they had been outlawed for like the last 40 some years. Recently lifted the ban on flips, though you don't get any scoring advantage doing one.
