Working on "remodeling" the houses now. Based on what I'm seeing, its gonna be a fight to the death with the starlings this year.

Can someone give me a brief overview of purple Martins? I know they migrate and people have those houses on poles.
What’s the appeal? Just to watch them? I may look into a house, what basics should I know?

In North Central Alabama and the martins will inspect my house and move on to the houses near the lake at the end of the subdivision. Some years I don’t see any stop by. I have a good fly way but food is more plentiful elsewhere.

I had a bunch flying high yesterday but none of them made their way to my house. I will take birds over bugs any day. They fly unlike any other birds as well. Fun to watch

Actually they eat a ton of dragonflies, which eat mosquitos.
They migrate from Brazil to the same houses each year.
A lot of info on purplemartinconservation.org

They eat a lot of bugs out of the air. They will just kill those termite swarms.

We replaced our old house. Interested to see if we will get any residents. Our old house was filled every year for the last 12 years.

quote:Yeah, that plus the fact that mosquitoes make up less than 3% of their diet means they are likely a net plus on mosquitoes.

If you can play some of their chatter via a you tube video with a speaker in your yard in the early morning they will hear it and may take a closer look. It worked on getting my first pair last year.
