I haven't been to a concert (short of small, local music venues) in over 20 years - last one was seeing some bands like Apoptygma Berzerk and VNV Nation at The Masquerade in Atlanta when my first wife was really into that kind of music. Last outdoor concert... damn, I think it was the band Live in Birmingham, late 90s.

This summer I'm going to go see Lindsey Stirling in concert... any recommendations on what to expect? Venue is a 7500 person outdoor location (so nothing as crazy as filling a football stadium) but curious what to expect (if anyone has some experience with it). I do plan on getting there early, and I'll be in part of the venue that has seating so I won't need a blanket or lawn chair.

with that particular venue? You didn’t say what it was
With live music in general? That’s a pretty undefined question but if you like the artist I’m sure you’ll have fun

I see a couple dozen or more shows every year. Leave your issues at the door (if you have any) and go have a good time

You're certainly making the right decision planning this life-changing excursion 6-months in advance.

Stay safe!

Inconsiderate people around you talking the whole time and filming the entire concert with their phone in your line of sight. The live concert experience sucks these days.

For big shows I’d agree.

Small venues are still an amazing time in my experience. I’ll take a low tier band in an intimate venue 100 times out of 100 over seeing a huge act in a stadium or gym- even if it’s a favorite of mine. I still go to those sometimes but I’m always a little unsatisfied

Heh, fair.

The Allianz Amphitheater in Richmond.

Why doesn't this count? This is the best way to see a band.

Because I could literally walk to them, and it didn't require any prep or anything.

Other than that, sure, it totally counts.

I don't think I've ever really prepped for a concert. My wife works in the front office for an outdoor amphitheater like the one you are going to. We used to go to tons of shows. A little more difficult with young kids, but we still go to a few a year. Summer in the South is hot and humid. No surprise there. To me, it's worth getting assigned seats to not have to get out there early to claim a spot on the lawn.

like what?

arrive at the venue via your preferred transportation option
enter the venue via the entrance and scan your ticket
follow the signs to your section and seats
occupy your seats
enjoy the show and remember to hydrate

Wow, if I go 6 months without getting a live music fix I get annoyed, much less 20 years.

I started loving live music as a freshman in high school. Started with seeing American Tragedy up here in North LA. Go to as many concerts as possible. Some are quite a bit better than others but in the past 20 years there are very few things that have changed other than the cost of a ticket and drinks.

Going to see a good band at a cool venue is just as enjoyable now as it's always been.

i would consider attending all of these shows (except whatever a "khalid" is) if this is your hometown venue

especially JRAD which is a guaranteed boogie down good time

Damn man.

I'm guessing you're in a band... can we ask who, or is that too much personal info?

It's about an hour and a half from where I live... close enough to drive in a day, but far enough that if the concert has a late start I'd probably get a hotel rather than try to drive tired.

I should see if any friends would make the trip with me for some of these. I could see any of those being a blast of a road trip.

Of that list I would say Alabama Shakes is definitely worth the drive. They are great live and Britney has an incredible voice.

They put on a good show in Baton Rouge 25 years ago. It was a small venue (Spanish Moon).

Well damn, you're performing less than an hour away in Charlottesville in April. I'll have to check that out (shame the only seats left are in the 300 sections)

Also, more amusingly...
