There was a strong article in the WSJ this morning about growing resistance to building data centers in rural areas.

It’s becoming clear that voters in deep-red regions are pushing back hard on AI, citing rising energy costs from data centers and fears of labor market disruption. Many are saying plainly that they don’t want AI reshaping, or destroying, their way of life so wealthy tech elites can get richer while the working class continues to get squeezed.

Do you see Trump and the GOP changing course on these issues in response to that pressure?

No, because in the end the USA benefits from a leadership position in this area.

Of course, just as cheap and available land and non-union sentiment brought industries to the South, the same drivers exist for this as well.

No.

It’s inevitable.
Necessity is the mother of invention.

Companies will find AI much more reliable than humans. More efficient, more accurate.

If you had a business that employed 50 people and half were causing more problems than creating solutions, you’d take the AI system.

It’s unavoidable.
We don’t save jobs for the sake of the people in them.
Massive headcount reductions in the next 10 years.
People will have to evolve to meet new demands. Whatever that may be.

Get out of your echo chamber. Americans are loving AI and what it’s done for our country. We are extremely lucky to have leaders like Elon paving the way.

No, if it wasn't for Trump I think these data centers would be built in China or other 3rd world nations.

Don't these data centers have their own energy plants? The ones i've seen, all have their own turbines. Not sure how much this actually increases energy cost if they are producing their own power.

No political party is going to be able to win anything attempting to run on this platform.

Remember how much Obama got crapped on for telling people they should learn how to code?

If my State or local government subsidizes energy costs to a business such as a factory or something that will employ a lot of people then I’m good with subsidizing that business through my higher energy costs (to a point) to create jobs in my community.

But data centers are taking large subsidies (I’m paying a part of their electricity) and they only employee a few people. Data centers are not a great business to be in your community.

NIMBY is nothing new. From my experience it's most prominent among the young and the retired. In my area the retired Yankees come down buy a house and then resist any development

These data centers are such energy and water monsters, they need to be mandated to provide 100% if not more of energy needs. They can do it with Nuclear Modules in a small area. The water will be a little more difficult as the cooling towers will put a large amount of it into the atmosphere and drawdown any water table if underground water is used. Surface water may be viable if in abundance, not like the Colorado river in AZ.
If I were king, I think I'd insist that they design multi-level centers to decrease the footprint, but at the skyline loss, but I wouldn't be able to see it from my house...

Technology is great. But in the wrong hands, it can be devastating. We have a couple going in near us but we haven't felt the energy costs increasing as they are not fully online. However, in the wrong hands (and there are plenty out there), AI can be a disaster. It has already gotten to the point (reference the Derbin picture he used of the dead protester on the Senate floor), it's hard to tell real from AI.

The META data center in Richland Parish is getting 3 new generation plants built by Entergy.... care to guess who is paying for them?

Politician platforms are garbage.

If voters still believe “platforms” then they haven’t been paying attention.

You are right, though. Voters hate the truth.

Common sense would tell me META. Reality, i'm assuming, is some Louisiana politician through coordination with Entergy, gave them these power plants via paid for by entergy customers? Is there a line on your Entergy bill or something explaining it?

I'm not doubting you, but often times, some of this is people are taking internet rumor and running with it.

Im pissed ram and SSDs are now luxury items so people can make fake videos of cats lifting weights.

That's not even to mention the power and water usage issues

When a storm happens, they have to move parts all over the US because manufacturing of parts for transmission lines, as well as the actual plants are only done by a few companies.

Add in more plants needing said parts for turnarounds, storms, maintenance, etc and that alone will drive up consumer cost as the price of those parts increases due to demand.

There are a ton of issues that the consumer will eat at the end of the day whether the data centers build their own plants or not.

China is already way ahead of us in AI infrastructure development. The world is going to radically change in the next ten years whether people want it or not.

You forgot how they will gather enough water, power and rare earth material to build them?

When this is figured out in manner that is logistically possible I’ll bite.
