Yes, on both sides of the fence.

Q1: Are you willing to walk away if you don’t get on/get what you want?

Q2: How creative are you? If you can’t get money, then are you okay with getting extra time off…or something else that has value to you?

Q3: Why do you deserve a sign-on bonus?

Sign on bonus is a trap. Get taxed to the high heavens, see maybe half of it after taxes and then trapped for 2 years. Ask me how I know

Wife negotiated new company pay back her old company sign on bonus and negotiated more equity. It was a 2 year bonus 50% paid on start and 50% paid after 12 months. She left shortly after the second payment after negotiating that part.

Do you have leverage?
Do they want you or you want them?
What is your worth?
Can you call their bluff?

Yes. At the time, large signing bonuses were still common in big law moves but on their way out. I made them think I was considering other offers and asked for one to seal it. They gave it to me.

I’ve not. Never needed to. But one tactic could be to agree to it but defer it until 90 days, just to show them that you are worth it…assuming you are.

Yes. $20,000.00.

It pretty much what I was letting go with my stock that hadn't vested yet in previous company.

Yes. Then left 18 months later and had to pay part of it back because I didn’t make the 24 months agreement. Oh well, left for way better pay anyway.
