What sort of games are you looking to play?
Posted on 1/27/26 at 7:43 am to 2014Tigers
what do your friends play and what do you want to play

Unless you have friends on Xbox or want to do subscription model with game pass, go with PlayStation.
Any Microsoft content is going to be on the psn store.

Absolutely 0 reason to own an xbox anymore. PS5 has exclusives, Xbox does not

If you're going to be gaming casually or only anticipate playing 1-2 games, go with PlayStation.
If you are the type who frequently purchases new games, Series X with Game Pass is by far the better option.
ETA: There are very few "exclusives" worth talking about on either system. Switch 2 is the only system with any solid exclusives being released regularly.

I mean this is kind of false
Switch 2's library, outside of ports of 5 year old multi-platform titles, is fairly anemic.

The only reasons I would consider an XBox is if you have kids and want a fairly cheap way to keep them entertained with Gamepass or if you are like me and dont have the time keep up with or willing to spend the money on the latest games and okay with waiting for them to appear on Gamepass. For me Gamepass is a great deal and I dont even have the Ultimate tier, just premium. If you havent been a gamer in while, its an even better deal as there is a pretty large catalog of older EA, Ubisoft, and Bethesda titles though access depends on which tier of Gamepass you join.
PS5 has exclusives, though a few have started to appear on Xbox, and if you shop around ( $399.00 BEST BUY right now) you can get a PS5 digital for several hundred dollars less than a Series X .
As far as performance, Series X and PS5 are pretty much the same.

New IP is down across the board.
However, Nintendo and Sony seem to still value the idea of putting out something to justify their ecosystems. Meager as that may be in recent years.
Microsoft is just trying to be Netflix for video games. I still like the idea of owning a game or license rather than spending hundreds of dollars per year to rent whatever Microsoft deems me worthy to access.

Mainly new GTA and forza for me and the wife

Aren't they even doing the new Fable for the PS5?
I'd say really splurge on the PS5 Pro if you can swing it. That'll get you through until the next generation becomes available/affortable.

It isn't false at all. Nintendo is the only company coming out with exclusives with any regularity.

Much cheaper to do this by playing games on Game Pass and then buying the quality out of the bargain bin a year later.

quantity of exclusives is kinda irrelevant. Switch 2 has a number of them and most I am not interested to play.
If there are 3 exclusives on PS5 that are must plays for me, I don't care that the number is only 3...I'm getting a PS5. Same with XBox for that matter, if they actually had exclusives worth getting.

If you're only going to be playing these games, it really doesn't matter. Just go with whichever one you think sounds nicer.
Forza is a Microsoft product, so each new Forza game will hit Game Pass on day one with the subscription, but if you're just going to be purchasing that game each year, and only that game, Game Pass wouldn't be cheaper.

Really missing out here. Nintendo puts out far more killer games than they do duds.

What are the PS5 must-play exclusives coming down the pipe?

Nioh 3
(Not technically a PS5 exclusive since it'll be on PC...just no announcement on when/if it'll be available on Xbox)
Wolverine I guess? But that's like Q3/Q4.

Yeah...I'm seeing the same. If I had a PS5, it would be used solely for the exclusives. Just hard to justify having that sit around taking up space for 1-2 games a year that I might not even be interested in.

Well I think you'd have to compare the catalogs for PS Plus Premium vs. Game Pass Ultimate as well.
GPU does include more (and better) day-one releases, but it's also significantly more expensive.
