One of my favorite movies. I watch it every January. I’ve always wondered about a minor detail in the opening scene and thought I’d ask the board:

We knows it’s the late 1840s since Jeremiah is a Mexican War deserter. There were black men that appeared to be working the docks. Were they slaves or free men of color? I wouldn’t think Colorado had many slaves. Though they were doing laborious work on the docks, I guess they could have been free men. Again just a minor detail and it doesn’t even really matter nor does it affect the plot of the movie. I’ve just always like Colorado but don’t know much about its early history.

Great movie either way. I think Del is an under appreciated character. I love Bear Claw too. Always had a crush on Swan.

Colorado didn't become a state for another 30 years, and the western half was conceded by Mexico in the war Johnson deserted. It was a very wild place at the time. I think the fellows in the movie were intended to represent slaves brought by someone attempting to move in and start trade after/during the war.

One of my favorite Redford movies, and he'd been in a bunch of them over his career.

I just wish he and Paul Newman would have teamed up for one more "Buddy Movie" before the end of their respective careers. They did "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and then "The Sting" and were talking about doing "A Walk in the Woods" but by that time, Newman begged off thinking it was too physical for his age and then he died before the movie could come together.

Nick Nolte co-starred with Redford and did a pretty damn good job, but it would have been better with Newman.

Wasn’t it a short cut and they needed to make up time ?

Yes, he had to be talked into it. I've probably seen this movie more than any other and am embarrassed to say I did not notice the beads on the skeleton until recently.

he could have and should have just turned around and left them there. I never understood what was so important (to him) to help the soldiers. It’s not like they gave him no choice, or could have even if they wanted to.

What were they going to do if he refused to guide them? I know it was a rescue attempt but he didn’t know those people

Yeah the religious rescue group who asked his help, guilted him into it. That move Ended up getting his family killed and became his main anger towards the Crows. But they got to the settlers that were stuck in the valley a week quicker.

Great movie. Loved it. Rewatch at least 1x a year.

Jeremiah Johnson was Redford’s “snow movie”

Quintet was Paul Newman’s.

Score a point for Robert.

That was the reason given by the leader of the patrol looking to rescue the people stranded in the mountains. Time was not on their side to take a much longer alternate route.

As I recall the officer in charge of the patrol asked JJ how much of chance they'd fair if they went on alone without him, to which JJ responded "poor or none"
