Alice In Chains
They were a better band than Nirvana as well. By a significant margin.

I echo this same answer.

Alice in Chains and it isn't particularly close. Even with Staley dope sick and under the weather (and he fixed, reportedly "just enough" to function, right before they came on.)

Alice in Chains (and about 15 other ones).
I just don't get the overabundance of love that Unplugged In New York gets. It's really not that good. Kurt's voice is barely in tune and they added extra musicians, but still managed to sound lame.

I was never a major fan of Nirvana, even in the moment, so my vote is AIC.

Nirvana
I do like the AIC one too though.

For me it's AIC, that was a really good performance

I like and appreciate them both. I'm more of an AIC fan in general over Nirvana, and it was AWESOME how AIC started their set with Nutshell and each of the members gradually walked on to the set as the song evolved. However, I also REALLY liked Nirvana's covers (The Man Who Sold The World and Where Did You Sleep Last Night stand out).

AIC was great but the Nirvana performance seemed more iconic

AIC overall for me.
However Nirvana closing with Where Did You Sleep Last Night was haunting and always stuck with me.

AIC, and I really liked both.
AIC just felt different. Hauntingly beautiful show.
Jerry glancing at Lane every few seconds to make sure he was good.

Nirvana. Because it WASN'T actually unplugged.
The entire Unplugged movement is/was trash.
I don't need to hear AIC pretending to be an acoustic band.

AIC by a large margin. Just a better band, and it isn't close.

Truly genuine question here and will get DVed but I’ve been curious for years about this. I wish someone can explain to me the obsession over AIC. Is this more of a southern thing?
I grew up during the grunge era on the west coast and immersed in the grunge/Seattle scene. AIC was a respected band, but I never encountered a conversation where they were mentioned as the best or among the top. Sort of faded from my memory until encountering this board and they’re often brought up.

Honestly, both were good performances. I like AIC better as a band and I liked their unplugged performance better. One of the things about it for me is that it was more surprising how well they pulled that off because the instrumental portions of AIC's music seemed less suited for that transition, though I guess their harmonies were always going to be there regardless of the instruments, and they were the icing on that musical cake.
That's from a guy who is really close to clueless about music other than what I like so take it with a grain of salt
