The Smashing Machine shut out from Oscar noms except makeup

Kind of insane that a film with so much Oscar hype, especially for the Rock and Blunt, was totally shut out of all the major categories.
I know the film bombed. I know it was not that great. I saw it.
But Johnson was very, very good in the film and so was Blunt. Technically, it was also very well shot.
This just feels like a big F-U to the subject matter and lead actor. Very similar to the academy fricking over Stallone in 2015 for his role in Creed, which deserved an Oscar multiple times over.
The makeup was phenomenal though. It could win there.

Why do people give a frick about the Oscars:?
even before they went ultrawoke they were bullshite

The Oscar's are about 90% hype, 10% substance. Sometimes the broken clock is right and a great film wins a bunch like Oppenheimer.

This
Between Sinners and emilia pérez receiving the most nominations. No one I even know watches majority of these movies or take any of the academy awards nomination serious anymore.

Sinners was major, major movie. It was not very good IMO but it is not some movie no one has heard of.

Yea, Sinners was the number 7 domestic box office movie for 2025… the idea that it was some niche, fringe art project is nonsense
But as for no one taking the academy seriously, I couldn’t agree more there

I honestly think a big portion of the country now understands that any and all of the award shows are biased now and have little meaning.
One of my friends is a big country music lover and was going off last week about some silly country award show that Miranda Lambert won everything in.
Now I am not a huge country music lover but if you think Miranda Lambert is the best country singer, we are not the same.
The oscars are just who knows who as most of them are

The film had very little Oscar hype, so not surprising at all. Especially with tepid reviews.

Because throughout the eras of corrupt voting, voters pandering towards self-congratulatory Hollywood films, and social justice voting, even being snubbed for a nomination or a win could sometimes elevate a film in the eyes of moviegoers. There are a lot of cases where there is fame for a film losing at the Oscars while the film that beat it has become almost obscure.
And because not giving a frick about the Oscars is now a badge of honor.

The Rock didn't get nominated for Best Actor?
Wow, the Oscar's really are a joke.

I wouldn’t say Oscar hype. More like a film with so much (what they thought would be) Oscar criteria crammed into it. The only “hype” I remember seeing on this was message boards and social media comment sections saying stuff like “Yeah. I don’t know why they’re making a movie about him. It’s not a well known story that’s gonna sell tickets. Looks like they’re just shooting for an award.”

I think a big problem for this movie is the fact nobody outside of the most fanatic MMA fans ever heard of this guy.
I know the old days didn’t have a ton of stars but they could’ve done better

Watched this last night and man did Emily Blunt nail that fricking hot but fricking crazy. I had a ex wife just like her and she had me having flashbacks.
