The $3.8 million project took just 4 1/2 years to complete and was unveiled in March 2024.

The price was higher than a similarly sized bathroom in the Bronx’s Soundview Park, which cost $2.1 million but took twice as long to build.

How does this tiny building cost $3.8 million?

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A $3.8 million public restroom at a Staten Island playground has won a prestigious architecture award and could serve as a model for future New York City facilities.

The public restroom, located in the Luis Lopez Playground on Targee Street in Park Hill, was recognized at this year’s American Institute of Architects New York Design Awards for its modular construction method.

This public restroom was designed for NYC Parks as a pilot project using modular construction to deliver a more cost- and time-efficient result. The requirements were based on the current NYC Parks Standard Public Restroom Design for conventionally built restrooms with two restroom spaces and one maintenance and operations space.

According to The American Institute of Architects New York, the space was awarded this honor due to its innovative approach for a faster and more efficient building process.

“The jury was looking for projects that solve real-world challenges and represent the idea that architecture is for everyone,” Brie Hensold, an urban planner with HASLA and a member of the voting jury, said in a statement to The New York Post. “The Lopez Playground Comfort Station is a small building — but it is a smart, cost-effective way to solve an everyday problem.”

According to previous reporting from the Advance/SILive.com, the shipping container-like restroom was designed in 2021 and unveiled in 2024, and was the first of its kind in the city. It was manufactured in three pieces at a Pennsylvania factory before being transported and assembled on-site.

At the time of its opening, the project was praised by Councilmember Kamillah Hanks: “The modular design of this public restroom at Lopez Playground is a testament to our commitment to smart, sustainable solutions on Staten Island. This approach not only makes our parks more accessible and enjoyable but also sets a new standard for cost-efficiency when constructing new public amenities.”

This looks like an old bathroom at a playground or baseball park in Louisiana.

Imagine getting paid $3.8 million for a restroom that probably cost 5% of that to actually build

Whoever got that gig was brilliant

The original bathroom design took 9 years to build. Was the old one built by Teedy?

Link to the German/New York architecture firm who designed it.

Limited on-sitework to foundations and utilities shortened the on-site construction and installation period to under three months. For the local community, the abbreviated schedule proved to benothing short of amazing.

Clad in colorful glazed thin brick, the pavilion ties seamlessly into the newly renovated playground. Inside, a bright, daylit interior feels warm and welcoming. In warmer months, the entrance doors open fully, and simple, easy-to-use hardware reinforces a sense of safety. A sedum roof tops the building, and all stormwater is managed on site.

The design leverages the efficiencies of modular construction, using a light steel frame and thin brick cladding. Each module is approximately 75 percent lighter than a comparable site-built masonry restroom building. A high-performance envelope with continuous insulation and careful detailing eliminates cold bridges. Together with an all-electric systems approach, these measures cut operational energy use and reduce embodied carbon.

New Yorkers will have this destroyed in 6 months.

Company: Axis Construction Corp
Affiliates: MODLOGIQ
Location: Staten Island, NY, USA
Gross Size of Project: 680 Square Feet

$3.8 million/680 sq ft is only $5,588 per square foot!

Did they connect all the plumbing with SharkBite fittings?

“We’ve been in the worst bathrooms,” said Fatima Varo, right.

This is what $1 million gets you in New York

This one costs $1.7 million in San Francisco.
