Trump to issue executive order protecting the Army/Navy game from the CFPlayoffs

President Donald Trump says that he plans to sign an executive order giving an exclusive four-hour broadcast television window to the annual Army-Navy football game, citing concerns of encroachment from the nascent College Football Playoff system.
“The Army-Navy Game is one of our Greatest American Traditions — Unmatched Patriotism, Courage, and Honor! This incredible Tradition is now at risk of being pushed aside by more College Playoff Games, and Big TV Money. NOT ANYMORE!” Trump wrote on Truth Social Saturday. “Under my Administration, the second Saturday in December belongs to Army-Navy, and ONLY Army-Navy! I will soon sign a Historic Executive Order securing an EXCLUSIVE 4 hour Broadcast window, so this National Event stands above Commercial Postseason Games. No other Game or Team can violate this Time Slot!!!”

The order, if allowed to go into effect, would be a blow to Disney’s ESPN and Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT. ESPN has the exclusive rights to the College Football Playoffs through 2031-2032, and has been sublicensing some games to TNT.
It would be a boon, however, to David Ellison’s Paramount, which has the rights to the Army-Navy game on CBS through 2038.

Welp. There goes any chance of moving the game to an earlier time slot.
In the future, the CFP National Championship Game will be played on the Saturday before the Super Bowl.

The Army/Navy game is maybe the last bastion to remind us how CFB used to be and what it was all about. I think one day solely dedicated to that memory is not too much to ask.

I’d like to see how an EO can tell private entities like ESPN and FOX when they can and can’t show games

Why the frick is the president putting out executive orders on college football?
Posted on 1/19/26 at 12:33 pm to TigerintheNO
Yeah, because that’s the most important thing impacting people’s lives at the moment in the U.S.

I like a lot of his moves but this is dumb.

Why did Nixon declare Texas the National Champion over Penn State?
There's nothing new under the Sun.

I guess even a 12-0 Army or Navy will be ineligible for the CFP if it moves to that weekend since they’ll be playing each other
Kind of like how no SWAC teams can go to the FCS playoffs because they’re playing for their conference championship in the middle of them

I mean if Texas was a swing state then it was a pretty smart move

I don’t think he needed to worry about swing states. The 1972 presidential election was one of the most lopsided in history.

He didn’t sign an EO declaring anything, he made a comment after #1 beat #2 in an era where the the MNC was named before the bowls and multiple outlets had different champions the polls were free to name whoever they wanted. It’s not remotely close to a President trying to insert himself into discussions about expanding the CFP

Army/Navy playing so fricking late in the year in an exclusive window is a relatively recent thing. It's not some major tradition that would be getting killed by network bullshite.

The FCC regulates broadcast television.
The NFL isn't allowed to show games on Friday and Saturdays from the second Friday in September through the second Saturday in December.

They need to make the same law barring FBS football from Friday nights until the bowl season…

Government controls virtually everything you see on TV. From words and phrases to dissemination.
Boomers granted them this authority because they were scared children would become satanists if they watched a music video.
