Interesting aspect of Tomlin ‘stepping down’…the Steelers retain his rights going forward

This is important: Mike Tomlin leaving the organization means the #Steelers will retain his rights. He was NOT fired.

It seems likely he’ll take a year off, possibly do TV, and then become a trade candidate next year, similar to Sean Payton when the #Saints  held his rights and later traded him to Denver.

Also means he really wasn't fired.

At most they said they weren't going to extend further.

He only had one year left on his contract anyways so if he “sits” a year whether it’s doing tv or arse in a white sand beach somewhere, how can they still have his “rights”?

What if he steps away for 5 years or so and then gets the itch? The hell kinda nonsense is in these contracts?

I guess he owes them one year of coaching.

All it really means is they get a draft pick from the next team.

I mean if it’s some general compensatory end of the 7th rounder, okay whatever, but if they have to genuinely trade him, I don’t see how that’s remotely enforceable in any way but whatever.

I suppose it would depend on the language.

Extension for 5 years as the HC beginning in 2022 vs. under contract from 2022 - 2026 could be viewed differently

Its a win / win for all parties (except the team that trades for him next season).

Seems like he could just go “okay I’m ready to take my job back” after a year and make them make a move without having to trade him

If they have his so-called rights, are those rights for free or are they keeping him on salary?

My guess - the Steelers have the rights to PAY him to COACH for another year.

He gets paid when he coaches but that right doesn't expire until it's used, negotiated away, or undone to a dismissal.

It's like a player refusing to play the final year of his contract. It tolls (i.e. rolls over) to the next year after a certain extent.

Sean Payton had multiple yrs left on contract. He could’ve sat out another yr or two to avoid the compensation.

Payton had 3 yrs left and sat out one. (3rd round pk)
Tomlin has 2 yrs left. Steelers only get compensated if he coaches before 2027. If he comes back after one yr I’d guess it’s a (5,6 ? round pk)
