Stumbled across this gem today and it brought back quite a few memories:

PDF file of program

Stovall's second year. Late (24 October) OOC game, a 14-38 loss in a 3-7-1 season.

Jenkins, Nader, Boss on staff.

Softball coach named Cooter.

Eric Martin still a running back.

Vintage BR ads.

Sophomore year homecoming. Absolute beat down. This was in the era where Florida State was putting its program back together after hitting rock bottom in 1973 and 1974. Florida State agreed to many road games with no return several years in advance. This LSU game was the fifth game in a row that the Seminoles played a game on the road. At Nebraska, at Ohio State, at Notre Dame at PItt and then at LSU. They went 3-2 in those game but it really took a toll on them. Later in the year Southern Miss beat them at home, 58-14.

I tried to forget that year. Lost to Tulane 48-7. Horrible team. But went to Orange bowl the next year when we added Mac Brown yo staff as WB coach, Hilliard & James as RB’s, and moved Eric Martin and Herman Fontenot to WR.

Am I remembering right that Lamabe found out he was being fired when he saw the head baseball coach position advertised in the newspaper?

It was ugly. What made it worse was that they didn't steal a hunk of sod to bring back to their cemetery because they expected to stomp our unranked team.

FSU Sod Cemetery - no LSU 1981

I was there. Freshman Greg Allen's coming out party with over 200 yards rushing - an FSU record.

We beat Bobby Bowden and FSU that year. Dalton Hilliard ran all ove them and the win put us in the Orange Bowl. When the press asked Bobby Bowden after the game what he thought about LSU fans throwing oranges on the field his answer was; "Well I am just glad they weren't going to the Gator Bowl"

Not sure if it was a rumor, but didn't Bowden want the LSU job before they hired Rein?

quote:

"I was always very fond of LSU, and I nearly took it," Bobby Bowden recalled. "I thought Florida State would be just a short stop. I didn’t plan on staying. At the last minute, I decided to stay in Tallahassee."

quote:

After the 1979 season, Charles McClendon retired at LSU after compiling a 2-14 record against Alabama's Bear Bryant. The school called Bowden, who finished 11-1 in 1979. LSU's brass offered enough money to pull Bowden, but during that same season Florida State went on the road in Baton Rouge and won, 24-19.

quote:

The win, coupled with a budding recruiting base in Florida, convinced Bowden he didn’t need to leave Florida State to win a national title. But staying put presented risks. LSU was a program with a national championship, and Bryant was nearing the end of his career at Alabama. Florida State "was nothing compared to LSU," said Terry Bowden, who was a graduate assistant on his father’s staff in 1979. From 1980-1986, Florida State won 10 games once and went 55-25-3.

"But Dad said 'If I can beat LSU when I got nothing at Florida State, then I can build something here.'"

Back then Dale Brown and basketball ruled the roost. Back when basketball was fun and the PMAC actually had a purpose

I had piles of them from my dad, who went to every home games (minus 2 or 3) for 40+ years.

Shockingly 1982 was the only win by the Tigers over FSU in a regular season game. I think we've lost to them about ten times

Thanks for sharing. My freshman year. I made the trip to Notre Dame as a member of Tiger Band. We traveled from BR to South Bend and back in busses. Definitely different times from today.

I especially liked the ad for Steinbergs advertising Browning shotgun. You could never advertise firearms now. I remember keeping my shotgun in north end zone dorm room. Used to go squirrel hunting off of Gardere lane.
