CSB- YouTube Auto Repair

Son called yesterday and said his car (2012 Xterra) wouldn’t shift out of neutral. The shifter moved, but the dash indicator stayed in neutral. Thankfully, he was in a parking lot where we could safely leave it. I called my friendly local mechanic who gave me a likely diagnosis- the shifter cable was broken. Did a YouTube search and found that there’s a plastic grommet that dry rots/disintegrates over time. Watched a 10 minute video, ordered an $8 part on Amazon, and we’ll be back in business tomorrow. The video also showed me how to bandaid it in order to get it out of the parking lot.
Thanks YouTube

Sounds like you should’ve left this in the YouTube comments.

It's truly amazing what an average person could fix with a little effort. Most are just too scared thinking one has to be a licensed mechanic to replace an air filter.
Not saying Bob can rebuild his transmission but a lot of things can be done at home.

a lot has to do with people not having or able to use tools properly...
I've fixed more stuff with duct tape, wire and cable ties to get me to the house or until parts come in...
yes...youtube is absolutely your friend...
changed timing belt on a tundra...repaired OB motors, appliances, plumbing, electrical you name it...

I told my son if this didn’t fix it, that any other repair would likely be above my expertise

All transmission linkage should be made of metal like it used to be. But they saved 0.10 making it plastic when making the car so frick it.
I’ve had to do the same repair. It’s usually because this plastic grommet is too close to a heat source like the exhaust piping. This is the issue on one of my vehicles, so I keep a spare grommet in the glovebox.

For as much shite as people give Indians online, I will admit they are the GOAT at making tutorial videos for obscure BMW/Mercedes repairs.

Don’t forget to update the thread when that 14yo Nissan says ‘hold my beer’

I had to do something very similar in the parking lot of my lodge to my 04 Tahoe. It was a tiny little linkage and only took about 30 minutes to fix.
YouTube plus owning an extremely popular vehicle has made me a better mechanic than I ever thought possible.

Be careful trusting youtube repair videos. There are some out there giving terrible advice.
Example: I watched several videos on changing the oil in a Toyota Venza where the guy just unscrews the filter spilling oil everywhere. The new filter comes packaged with a plastic tool that allows you to drain the oil from the filter in a controlled manner before unscrewing it. These guys just ignored that step and made the job a lot messier than it needs to be.
Always watch more than one video and gather as much knowledge as you can before blindly following just one.

Thankfully, this is an easy fix-literally popping in a plastic piece and snapping it into place. I don’t have the knowledge, tools or confidence to tackle anything too in depth. The last thing I want to do is be pissed at myself for messing something up. I’d rather have someone else to blame.

YouTube has saved me thousands of dollars in home and auto repairs. Just last month the number 3 ignition coil on my daughter’s car crapped out. The shop charges three hours to remove the plenum/intake to get to the coil. YouTuber girl says , with small hands, you can reach the coil from each side of the intake. Sure enough, I coach my daughter through her own repair. Only costs was the coil itself. Took less than 20 minutes. It’s my first go-to for repairs.

Next time save 9 mins and tell ChatGPT your exact problem and it will tell you the most likely problem then if it isn't that then check something else and if you need a part it will provide you with links to where you can buy it which includes the cheapest price you can get it.

I've used YT videos to do work on so many things.
Two trucks
4-wheeler
Weed eater
Tractor
Plumbing
A/C unit
Chainsaw
and so on
No telling how much money I have saved over the years.
