Does Miami's win change the narrative of there's too many teams in the playoff?

It has to, right? First double digit seed to win a playoff game means the expanded field has quality games that merit the expansion.

Granted, JMU and Tulane never did belong, but the point still stands after tonight.

I literally just posted this in the game thread

Miami winning would basically invalidate the 12-team playoff in year 2

I think the big change coming into get rid of the byes. We will see what happens tomorrow but teams with the bye are 0-5 in this format.

The last thing people promoting the legitimacy of this playoff should want is an 11-2, non-conference champ Miami winning the playoff.

It is basically saying "frick it we want to crown the hottest team late and not the team who was the best all year"

Definitely agree the format needs some tweaking. While that's one hell of an anomaly for teams with byes to be 0-5, I can't see them wanting to get rid of byes. Now a 25 day layoff from last game to second round is something that needs to be looked into.

I would bet it goes to 16 teams with no byes. They do need to start a week earlier

When you look at how awful Ohio State's schedule was this year, there's no way you can call them anything close to the best team all year.

Could see that being the route they go. Expanded field, no byes, shorter time between playoffs and end of season.

At some point, conference championships are likely to go away.

Every other sport in America has a playoff. I’d much rather this format than what happened in 2003 and 2004.

FWIW, under the old BCS system, the national championship game would have been a rematch between Indiana and Ohio State.

Hated the BCS era. A playoff is by far and away the most objective way to determine a champion.

Yeah their schedule would’ve been much tougher with all these good SEC teams on it.

Well yeah, there's really no questioning that.

No.

Miami proved today what a lot of people knew all along, that they began 2025 as a national title contender because they have the best defensive player and best front 7 in the sport.

However, they should've been penalized for two really crap losses to SMU and Louisville.

That running through a landmine feeling throughout the regular season was what made college football so fun. That doesn't exist anymore. The regular season is largely meaningless now.

The playoff should be, at most, 8 teams.

Make the regular season and conference performances matter again.

I think it’s more indicative of bullshite bias for popular teams.

I wonder, if you look back at the Sangrin rankings for the last 30 years taking poll bias out of the equation, how many times they got it right.

I haven't seen a straw man argument in quite some time.

That’s how most championships are won. Normally the hottest team at the end of the year will win at all.

That sounds much easier said than done. Because who was actually the best team all year?
