Moving to New York in your 20s

Have you or anyone you know ever made that jump?
Someone close to me has been talking about moving to NYC after college. It’s that early- to mid-20s “let’s go try to make it” kind of move. And by make it, I mean actually being able to live there and build a life…..not just scrape by for a few months.
She’d be starting mostly from scratch, picking up smaller jobs at first. There will be a little help getting her started, but she understands that it’ll be a struggle for a little while.
She’ll be looking to get her foot into production….behind-the-scenes work for TV, radio, theater, that kind of thing.
Just curious if anyone here has tried it themselves or knows someone who did and how it did, or didn’t, work out for them.

not to say it can't be done but that's where just about every other person trying to get their foot in the entertainment industry door is
I had a cousin, RIP, that was an actress that went that route, she had some moderate success, some Broadway/off Broadway roles and had a recurring part in a big soap for a few years, it was tough but I think she'd have regretted it more to not have even tried, good luck to your friend

Many other cities and states. Follow the tax reprieves. There was a reason Louisiana and Georgia were so hot for filming. All about the taxes.

Tons of people move to NYC straight after college, by getting a job based on the degree they earned. She should do that

I did it. I’m still in the NYC area 30 years later.
For certain industries (e.g., finance), I think most people should at least experience some amount of time in NYC.

I love NYC, if you've got the money to live in NYC the way it's meant to be, it's awesome, of. course that kind of money affords you to be able to take periodic "breaks" from the city

I think some of the romance of it is gone at this point, but moving to Chicago, Boston, NYC or DC in your 20s is a draw I fully understand

Daughters best friend since middle school and college roommate did it right out of LSU. Marketing major . Had a really good internship between Jr and sr years with Google. Still there and happy 10 years later. From a town so small it doesn’t even have a post office.
