Biden stopped the executions of 37 men. Trump's DOJ wants to punish them

And the rest are stuck in limbo, having been told to expect a move to the Colorado prison, named ADX Florence, at any moment. That limbo has driven one of the prisoners to try to kill himself, he told NPR.
President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi have defended their treatment of the prisoners, saying the men deserve it because of their murder convictions. Some family members of people murdered by the prisoners support the transfer of the men to ADX.
But interviews conducted and documents obtained by NPR show the moves the Department of Justice has taken to additionally punish the men violate current federal policy, and litigation claims those actions could be unconstitutional.

We already know, conclusively, that harsher punishments do not deter crime. Longer sentences don’t deter. Supermax conditions don’t deter. Making prison more miserable doesn’t deter. This has been studied to death spanning decades, jurisdictions, and crime categories.
Certainty of punishment matters. Severity beyond a baseline does not.
These men were already removed permanently from society. From a public safety standpoint, the goal has already been achieved.
This is just resource-intensive cruelty so a subset of people can delight in schadenfreude. That’s it. The government is spending more money to make already condemned people suffer more because it feels good to some voters.

You *think* you know that based on US crime and punishment... the US does not punish to the point of deterrence- other countries do and have better success.
Aside from deterrence... punishment is more than deterrence or removing someone from affecting society. Or at least it should be.

Criminal justice policy is supposed to reduce crime at a population level, not satisfy revenge fantasies. The evidence is overwhelming that increasing punishment beyond a baseline does not meaningfully deter crime. What matters is the certainty of consequences, not how cruel or theatrical they are.
Your hand-cutting example actually proves the point. Yes, a mutilated individual is unlikely to steal again. That tells us nothing about whether other people are deterred, which is the only metric that matters for public safety.

This is easy to determine. What are the statistics for stealing in countries where limbs are cut off vs. countries like the US?
